Somebody in another thread said a lot of those runs were unearned. So there's some crappy fielding going on, too.

*Position player wise.

Not sure what to make of Roberts. He's given up a fair amount of hits but he's also striking out a lot of guys with very few walks.

ERA is 5.37 against weak competition. Giving up lots of earned runs so far.
Teams hitting .310 off our pitching (God knows what that would be if you excluded McCarty).

Pitching will improve as year goes on and roles are figured out. It always does. But best case scenario, this is probably going to be what we've seen the last several years. One or two good starters, a lights out closer, a good middle reliever, and lots of question marks beyond that.

Definitely have some shiit to clean up. Lineup has been bailing out the staff and the errors.

Just as the world comes to an end according to some of you, the pitching staff holds Evansville to a total of 4 runs the last two games...lol

It's Evansville.

We will find out a lot this coming week.

Our starting pitching is going to struggle after Friday and Saturday. However, we have some very capable relief options from what I've seen. Driver, Powers, Smith, Mikell, Keys, Wallner, and Sandlin all look to be solid options if used properly.

I like the trio of Powers, Wallner and Sandlin as our 7, 8, 9th inning options and possibly part of inning 6. If our starter can get us 5+ quality innings, then bring these guys in for 3 or 4 outs each. Granted I realize this (relief pitching scenario) can't be used every game but in close games our chances of winning close games should be increased.

Seven earned runs for a three-game series. That's just awful. I hope we are that bad every weekend.

I'm assuming you meant Sunday.

How about a wait and see? We're only 2 games in on each day (and 1 Wednesday game)... 1 good and 1 bad on each weekend day pitching wise.

Heck, by that argument.. Fridays are bad otherwise (14 runs given up in 2 games), Sundays (9 runs given up in 2 games)

So to say we're in trouble on those days.. ehh.. I'll wait and see what happens.. (of course, this is a certain coach we're talking about who continues to under-achieve...)

I'm not going by the stats. I'm going by what I've seen so far with my eyes. Roberts will be fine. Will struggle some because he doesn't have a 3rd pitch. McCarty will be solid but give up a lot of hits. The Carroll kid is 85-88 with a very average breaking ball. I assume he has good control or he wouldn't be in that role with his current stuff. He can't walk anybody because I think he's going to get hit hard.

Braley is a thrower. Plus fastball velocity but lacks any downhill plane or movement. Decent slider but no 3rd pitch. Control is fine but doesn't have command. Meaning he's not going to walk many but doesn't really hit his spots.

What's your take on Wallner? Pretty impressive on Friday.

Yea he's 92-95 straight downhill. That's rough on hitters. When his lower body fills out I could see him getting into the upper 90s. How in the world he slipped through the cracks is beyond me. He has a power curveball that's also going to be a hammer if it becomes more consistent.

How do you see him fitting in down the road as a pitcher?

From the little I've gotten to watch, he looks damn good as a hitter but 92-95 with a good breaking pitch as a freshman is the potential for a freaking elite pitcher...especially if you think he has room to get stronger in the legs. Do you work with him more on the mound and try to really develop him as a starter?
