Possible new NY Islanders arena at Belmont Park

Quote:A group of area professional team owners may be investing in a new arena for the New York Islanders at Belmont Park, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The proposal to develop the new Belmont arena would be a joint venture between the owners of the New York Mets, New York Rangers and the Islanders.

Though the Islanders have a lease at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, a clause would let them terminate the agreement and allow them to leave following the 2018/2019 season, according to the story.

Bloomberg reports that a private equity group called Oak View Group, in which Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan is an investor, and Sterling Project Development, which is controlled by the Mets majority owners the Wilpon family, have been discussing developing a new home for the Islanders on part of the Belmont Park property.

Speculation has run rampant that the Islanders have been looking for a new home, with the Nassau Coliseum, Willets Point in Queens adjacent to Citi Field and the Elmont racetrack property mentioned as possibilities.

Islanders’ officials could not be reached for comment.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has reportedly taken part in the talks for the proposed Belmont arena.
