VT's Babcock talks arena upgrade, more premium football seats, ACC Network revenue

Quote:Tech has gradually renovated Cassell, its 55-year-old basketball arena, and this offseason will replace 4,000 wooden seats with wider padded ones. Babcock said the project will cost approximately $400,000 — the Hokies’ press release on the project last week did not include a cost estimate — and decrease the 9,567-seat capacity by about 300. He believes the athletic department will recoup that investment in two years by charging more for the improved seats.
“I love the building and the home-court advantage,” Babcock said. “One of these days we really want to work on the concourses and the whole building. We feel like in the interim we can take care of baseball, track and field, softball and some of our Olympic sports, keep chipping away at the coliseum, always do some things for football, and then really be positioned in this next capital campaign to work hard on Cassell.”
Toward that aim, Babcock last month traveled to Clemson in conjunction with the Hokies’ men’s basketball game against the Tigers. Clemson recently spent $63.5 million renovating Littlejohn Coliseum, and after touring the arena before the game, Babcock was impressed by its premium and student seating.
The Littlejohn construction forced the Tigers to play last season’s home games 30 miles away in Greenville, S.C., a hardship that cost Brad Brownell’s team time and energy. I asked Babcock if Tech would be willing to play a season, say, in Roanoke while Cassell Coliseum, where the Hokies are 14-1 this season, was remodeled.
“We haven’t gotten into that,” he said, “but it is a very big question that will have to be addressed one day.”

It's not state of the art, but definitely a nice place to watch a game on a beautiful campus.

So is VT happy with Buzz Williams. Are the fans happy with him as the men's coach?
