I remember a large contingent wanting to keep him. I didn't recall that they were football-only fans. I thought they were more like hoops people who had gotten close to him.

This is the way I remember it. Especially the basketball fans who got too close to Johnny Jones and wanted him to be named permanent head coach. I remember calling in the different radio shows saying how stupid it would be to hire Johnny Jones over John Calipari.

I have a feeling we wouldn't have had to forfeit a season if we'd hired Jones. So there's that.

Maybe - although his recruiting is suspect regarding bagmen as well. But Cal's wins with one whole season forfeited > Jones wins with the extra season.

NRTR.....But Texas coach Shaka Smart has lost just as many, if NOT more games....with CONSIDERABLY MORE talent. They are 10-18; losers of 4 straight and play UK in 2days. 4-11 in conference play

Shakas days may be numbered

Shaka isnt going anywhere.

Probably not this year. Next year, he will start the season on the hot seat.

BTW, he'd kill to be known as 10-loss Shaka right now.

The sad part is we may have wanted to forfeit.

Fun fact: Shaka has never won a regular season conference title. Not in the Colonial, nor the A10, and obviously not in the B12.

My two favorite Johnny Jones memories:

On recruiting T-head: "Man, that kid is too stupid to get into Sunday School."

On pressing some team in the 2nd half with a double digit lead. The other head coach is yelling at JJ to pull off the pressure. "I'll tell you what, you quit trying to score and I'll quit pressing."

He'd got a top 10 recruiting class...including the point guard which they desperately need. He'll be fine.

It's going to be an uphill climb next year.....If they don't come out of the gate on ?....next year will be his last....IMO
