Charles Cooke
Anyone remember Charles Cooke? He's the leading scorer for a 21-5 Dayton team that's hosting the 18-9 George Mason Patriots tonight. Big Atlantic 10 game.

Too bad JMU didn't accept the overtures from the Atlantic 10 during the Lefty years. Now their league has 3 former CAA (and Virginia based) teams doing quite well.

RE: Charles Cooke
Cooke leaving is when the Brady era officially ended. A year removed from an NCAA appearance and a First Four win JMU had a tough season with Semenov as the lone veteran on the team. Brady's past recruiting misses set up a team that was way too young with no leadership. Defections and problems ensued and despite fighting through a couple of solid regular seasons it couldn't make up for the lack of tournament success. Will always wonder what if- Cooke was a very good player and had he and Curry played together for 2 more seasons you have to think that JMU would have got through to the NCAAs at least once. Maybe that a few years removed from the NCAA appearance would have generated some legitimate momentum for the program. Maybe Brady would have left on his own? Who knows.

Was looking at the box score from the Dayton win tonight- as a team Dayton committed 5 turnovers. Crazy. I think we'll know that JMU MBB has arrived when they have a game with less than 10 turnovers- been a consistent problem through multiple coaches.

I said it from the beginning that Cooke was the best player in that class, followed by Curry. I watched them both play in HS and with Cooke you could just see the potential in his game.

It really is a shame that Cooke left.

Excellent player, but remember, if he had stayed at jmu he wouldn't be playing this year. He would have finished up last season.

Happy for him, hard work pays off. I agree with njduke, once he left Brady was done.

RE: Charles Cooke
I know this is all a bit subjective but I always thought that Andre Nation was the best recruit in the group. I still remember the caa tournament against Delaware where in one of the first possessions of the game Devon Saddler was being covered by Nation. Saddler was an absolute one on one bully and Nation blocked his first shot. By his standards Saddler had a very quiet game after that. Cooke, Curry and Nation were the foundation for a top 25 team. Allowing for the fact that Nation was a bit of a wild child, Brady is still partially responsible for developing a culture that allowed Nation to skid so far off the tracks the way he did. The culture of the program was a huge reason for Cooke leaving when he did.

RE: Charles Cooke
After his freshman year I said Nation would be Top 5 ever for JMU if he stayed healthy. Guess I should of said
Mentally healthy...

If Matt had kept the band together, last year would of been fun to watch...

Any news on what Nation is up to these days? He gets things turned around, I sure hope he did.

I was reviewing the box score of the Warriors/Pelicans game and saw Cooke listed as a DNP for the Pelicans. He's in the league now. That's a good team for him, as the talent pool is very shallow after Boogie and the Brow.

He's been dressing each game as their 12th man which means that he is well positioned and they think highly of him. The NBA has these two way contracts now where the player (usually the 16th and 17th guy for the team) can only be with the NBA team for a max of 45 days and has to spend the balance of the year with the G League team . Cooke is on one of those contracts. The fact that they are starting the season with him on the roster I think is a good sign for him.

Pointing out the obvious here- but the transfer for Cooke worked out well. He was a relatively young Sophomore at JMU so the red shirt year helped him. He had some good individual and team success at Dayton which provided more exposure than he would have had at JMU, and I think that has helped him stick in the NBA thus far.

No reason he can't be a Kent Bazemore like pro. Just a shame that his transfer also was the death knell for the Matt Brady era. The program never recovered from losing Cooke's talent.

Found this article interesting. Would be curious to get the take from folks who have been around JMU MBB practices and side work. The number of shots that Archie Miller had them taking every day seems like an enormous number to me. For guys who say that the prior staff prioritized the 3 point shot how does this measure up? It sounds like from the article this is how Cooke really improved his 3 point percentage.
