Seahawks, Tigers Collide In Key CAA Matchup
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sitting alone atop the CAA standings for the sixth consecutive week, the first-place UNCW men's basketball team tries to match the school record for victories on Thursday night when the Seahawks entertain streaking Towson in a key Colonial Athletic Association contest.
The Seahawks (24-9, 13-3) and Tigers (19-10, 11-5) are set for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Trask Coliseum. Tickets may be purchased by calling 910-962-3233, logging online to UNCWsports.com or visiting the UNCW Athletic Ticket Office 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
Live Seahawk Digital Network (SDN) coverage of the UNCW-TU contest begins with Mike Vaccaro providing the pregame show at 6:45 p.m. Visit UNCWsports.com/SDN for live audio coverage. In addition, a radio broadcast of the game can be heard on WLSG 94.1 FM and 1340 AM (Wilmington) and WSME 97.1 FM and 1120 AM (Jacksonville).
The Seahawks have won two in a row – on the road at Northeastern and Hofstra - and are clinging to the top spot in the CAA race with just two games remaining in the regular season. Charleston (21-8, 12-4) trails by just one game.
"Last weekend's games were two challenging ones for us," said UNCW third-year skipper Kevin Keatts. "They were tight games that we were able to finish down the stretch. They were two tough road games and we were very fortunate to return home with two wins."
The Seahawks are shooting for their third straight regular season title behind a familiar recipe borrowed from last year's NCAA club – balanced scoring, relentless defensive pressure and accurate long distance shooting.
Sophomore guard C.J. Bryce anchors four Seahawks in double figures with 17.0 points per game, followed by senior guard Chris Flemmings (16.0), senior guard Denzel Ingram (14.2) and sophomore forward Devontae Cacok (12.4). Cacok also ranks second in the CAA in rebounding with 9.9 rebounds each contest and tops the loop with 10 double-doubles this season.
Flemmings, who joined the team as a walk-on last season from Barton, has been a big boost for the Seahawks again this season. The talented performer has scored 997 points in a Seahawk uniform and will become the program's 23rd 1,000-point scorer this week. He's pocketed more than 1,800 points combined at Barton and UNCW.
The Seahawks lead the series, 21-14, and own a commanding 12-2 advantage in the Port City. The two teams have split the last 10 meetings, but UNCW won the initial game this season with a 77-67 verdict over the Tigers at SECU Arena.
Towson, picked to finish second in the conference before the ball tipped in November, is the hottest team in the CAA. Pat Skerry's team has won six games in a row and 11 of its last 12 contests after dispatching James Madison, 75-76, last Saturday. Junior guard Mike Morsell was selected as the CAA's Player-of-the-Week after averaging 25.5 points and 4.0 rebounds, including 60 percent shooting on the week and a 32-point performance at Elon.
"Towson will be a huge challenge," added Keatts. "They have a really good basketball team and we have a lot of respect for them."
The Seahawks and Tigers have not played in 54 days and Keatts says "it seems like an eternity in basketball" since the two clubs last met. "Nothing has changed in who they are. Pat's teams play tremendously hard. They are a little different now because (Mike) Morsell is really playing good basketball. When you add in (William) Adala Moto and the other guys, they are a very good basketball team that is the best rebounding team in the league by far."
In addition to possibly tying the school record for wins in a season, the Seahawks could also match the record for home victories with a win over the Tigers. Five UNCW teams have won 12 games at Trask Coliseum through the years (1977-78, 2001-02, 2005-06, 2007-08, 2015-16).
The Seahawks lead the CAA in home attendance and hope to build on four sellouts in 2016-17. UNCW has sold out games against East Carolina, Drexel, Charleston and Delaware already this season.
Following Thursday's test with the Tigers, the Seahawks wrap up the regular campaign on Saturday, Feb. 25, with a 2 p.m. start vs. Northeastern. UNCW and NU play for the second time in nine days on "Senior Day" when Chris Flemmings, Denzel Ingram, Ambrose Mosley and Chuck Ogbodo are honored for their contributions to the program.
