Anyway, boy did Kluber prove stever right. Talk about one of the best down the stretch performances. Every game seemed like 7-9 innings, with double digit K's. Very very impressive.

Watched the last few innings of the Sox game at work yesterday. Tough loss, but I'm glad the Astros are moving on. If the Indians don't advance, I'll be rooting for the Astros. One problem for them is McCullers performance. If he isn't on top of his game, they're a little thin at SP. And while they have a very good pen, it's nowhere near that legendary pen that the Yankees are rocking.

Lastly, if the Nats flame out in another division series, will Matt Williams be the one having the last laugh? So far they look like the same old Nats postseason team that can barely scratch a run across.

it was eerie quite frankly going back to July 7 and looking at the numbers i was projecting.
Kluber 15-4 with a 2.25 ERA in 195 innings
Sale 18-6 with a 2.90 ERA in 225 innings

Kluber finishes with a 2.25 number and Sale with a 2.90 number. I should have gone to Vegas :)

It's going to be really interesting to see what the Red Sox do with Sale going forward. His last month and a half collapse was just amazing. While Kluber was amazing, if Sale had been able to pitch reasonably well down the stretch, he would have won it. But a 4.64 ERA from August thru yesterday with 17 hr in final 75.2 innings just killed him. I think the Red Sox made some serious mistakes with his usage in August/September. I do think they managed him to some degree trying to get him to win the award. And it backfired.

As far as the Nats/Cubs series- a lot of credit has to go to the Cubs starters. Kendricks, Lester, and Quintana are 3 really good starters. Cubs were the best team in the NL post all star break at 49-25. Tonight will be fun. Hopefully send to a game 5 and get a chance to move on to LA.

Great to have you back swoosh!!!! Now we just need Brookes Owl to get back and we're set.....

you were eerily spot on. You missed a great chance to buy a lotto ticket. It just seemed like every time he went to the mound he spun a dominant performance. And you're right, the Sox did not do a good job managing Sale's workload and it seems to have backfired. Although in fairness he pitched really well yesterday. Yes, he gave up a HR, but the Astros have a dominant lineup. Can't really blame him for yesterday's loss

yeah I was waiting for bad Kluber to show up like we knew was out there, but he never did. Just remarkable. Then goes out game 2 and gets lit up.

Sale looked great yesterday. Boston was in a no win situation in the 8th I thought. You could tell Sale was tired, but you couldn't take him out.

Sale really an interesting case. One of those where you can't use the awards to show how good he is. I mean- last 6 years(or time when Sale a starter)- only Kershaw and Scherzer have a better fWAR than Sale does. But Sale had 3 years with his FIP and ERA both in 3's- so not going to win there. Then a year where his FIP was 2.73 but his ERA was 3.41- not going to win that. In 2014 his ERA was 2.17 and FIP was 2.51- but he only had 26 starts and 174 innings. Kluber that year had 34 starts and 235 innings to go along with his 2.44 ERA and 2.35 FIP. That's a gap in innings that is too much to bridge. And now this year.

It's funny, because you used to be the one who always talked about the jekyll and hyde results of Kluber

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread
oh yeah, Kluber used to always be the poster child for Jekyll and hyde. But not this year.

look at these numbers-
2014 5 starts with 4+ runs, 2 with 5 runs 8 starts with 0 runs, 6 with 1 run, 14 with 0-1 runs.
2017 4 starts with 4+ runs, 3 with 5+ runs 7 starts with 0 runs, 9 with 1 run, 16 with 0-1 runs
total of 9 starts with 4+ runs, 5 with 5+ runs 15 starts with 0 runs, 15 with 1 run, 30 with 0-1 runs

2015 11 starts with 4+, 5 with 5+ 3 with 0, 6 with 1, 9 with 0-1
2016 9 starts with 4+, 5 with 5+ 6 with 0, 6 with 1, 12 with 0-1
total of 20 starts with 4+ 10 with 5+ 9 with 0, 12 with 1, 21 with 0-1

So in 2015/16 it was 20 with 4 or more runs given up, 21 with 0-1. If that's not the definition, I don't know what is.
2014/17- his 2 Cy Young's- he still had 9 with 4+ runs, but 30 with 0-1.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread
what's funny is to look at Sale as well....
2014 3 with 4+ runs, 7 with 0, 8 with 1
2015 8 with 4+ runs, 5 with 0, 7 with 1
2016 8 with 4+ runs, 4 with 0, 5 with 1
2017 8 with 4+ runs, 10 with 0, 4 with 1
total 27 with 4+ runs, 26 with 0, 24 with 1
Kluber 29 with 4+ runs, 24 with 0, 27 with 1

BOTH are prone to bad starts. And equally great starts.

Nats get the rain out, allowing Strasburg to go on normal rest in game 4. This is the kind of break you need if you want to go all the way.

I'd love to hear from Brookes Owl who he'd rather see in the LCS.

Let's put it this way: I'm rooting for the Nats. Cubs are the worst of the teams that are left.

However I do not think starting Scherzer is a great idea. Honestly, I'd start Doolittle, Madson or Kintzler

yeah. hope he can do a CC Sabathia impersonation and go 4 good innings and then turn it over to Scherzer thru 7 and then Madson/Doolittle for 8 and 9.

Hope Dusty keeps the lineup like yesterday. Really grinded Arrieta to a pulp and got him out quickly. Just makes the lineup long and really tough.

except you don't want Werth batting second vs a RHP

I'd rather have the line up the way it is and have Rendon batting 6. It's what the lineup was for most of the year, and it works. Watching yesterday the Nats just worked Arrieta over. 90 pitches in 4 innings. By comparison Hendricks in game 1 had 106 pitches in 7 innings. It was just at bat after great at bat.

lineup for the Nats the same as yesterday. Which I think is a good thing. Think Dusty had no real other choice but to do that.

i disagree. I don't see why you'd want one of your worst hitters batting second. I wouldn't leave it that way for the sake of continuity. Plus, Werth played 70 games. I'd say they're capable of having a lineup where he doesn't bat second.

I'd rather see the team with the most rotation chaos after tonight.

It's hard to say which team is the better matchup for LA. I lean Cubs because I really just hate the idea of facing Scherzer and Strasburg. On the other hand, if Scherzer pitches tonight (unlikely at this point?) and Strasburg having pitched yesterday isn't the worst way to face the Nats. Maybe only have to face each of them once?

Heh. I checked out because I was tired of rehashing the same arguments, and then the Dodgers went into their tailspin and I got a little tense and kind of climbed into a hole for a while. Ready to talk LCS now.

Random thoughts: Kluber hurt? It's kind of crazy how they Indians went down to the Yankees, with Kluber just looking awful. Judge now with 3 4K games, which I think is a post season record.

Re Dodgers, here's something I hadn't realized: Maeda is a righty expert. We've all been thinking he's this good guy to have as depth. A guy who can make a spot start, or go long in relief. But Roberts the other day says he's here to get righties out. Among all MLB pitchers who faced at least 250 rhh...

Pitcher K% vs RHH
Max Scherzer 43.9%
Chris Sale 37.1%
Corey Kluber 36.6%
Kenta Maeda 32.6%

Pitcher K%-BB% vs RHH
Max Scherzer 39.2%
Corey Kluber 33.2%
Chris Sale 32.0%
Kenta Maeda 27.6%

Who knew? Dude is a high leverage righty killer.

A bit. And gloating over regular season greatness is a little too jinx-worthy. Let's see how this post season goes...
