Looks like the Nats have solved their pen problems by acquiring Madson and Doolittle from the A's for Treinen and prospects Jesus Lazardo and Sheldon Neuse

I'm confused by this trade. The Nats got two very good relievers and traded absolutely nothing.

Me too. Dodgers were looking at Doolittle, at least, and could have given up pretty good prospects. Makes me wonder (hope, really) if they're close to getting Justin Wilson...

why do you quote innings like it's some huge determinant? It's not. Voters don't give a flip about innings- as long as you have at least 180 innings, you have a chance...

The ERA, wins, K's- now THOSE are why Sale would win the Cy Young.

And the biggest thing- the season isn't over yet. Sale has to continue to pitch well.

I quote innings, not because the voters care, but because if everything else is mostly equal, they'd turn to innings and say, well they've been the same pitcher, but Sale has done it by pitching a full season and Kluber has not

I know WAR means squat to most voters, but it's fun to look at. MLB leaders fWAR/bWAR:
Sale 5.8/4.4
Scherzer 4.7/5.4
Kershaw 3.7/3.7
Kluber 3.6/3.8

Worth noting that baseball reference has Gio right behind Scherzer at 4.4 and both Stroman and Vargas ahead of Kluber.

In other words, a giveaway, like every other trade Beane & Co. have made over the last few years. 03-banghead

On the plus size, errr, plus side, the fat A-ball infielder acquired by the A's in this deal reportedly pronounces his last name "Noisy". So at least we got that.

yeah most of the A's trades have been rather weak. That teams needs an infusion of optimism in the form of a new ballpark. I feel like Oakland should be able to provide a viable site

4 of the NL's top 8 in wRC+. Admittedly one of them is Zimmerman, who appears on his way out of that grouping, but they're still incredibly dangerous.

...and continuing the WAR conversation, the Nats player leading the NL in WAR may not be the one you were imagining. Anthony Rendon at 4.6 - and he's #2 in MLB behind Judge.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread
Also, the Nats are very wise to make such a good trade. After next season Harper, Murphy and Gonzalez are free agents and Rendon follows after 2019. So the window is wide open for another year, but after that they start facing the loss of some real thump. A WS title this year, could be followed by one next year, which vindicate the trades for Eaton, Doolittle and Madson, as well as a possible trade for another SP. This is why you spend money and build your farm system and it's exactly what the Nats have done. And FWIW, it's what the Dodgers have done too

right. But the innings aren't a determinant by itself. Sale has to be the better pitcher for it to matter.

Now only 5.5 games up on the Cubs for the 2nd Wild Card spot. In the last 9 games- vs Cincy, White Sox, and Mets- 3 not good teams- they are only 4-5.

and also not surprising: Dbacks are 3-10 in their last 13

yeah, but before that they were 11-2 in their prior 13. A lot different long term period for Arizona. Also, the DBacks have had their struggles with St Louis, LA, and Atlanta- LA of course is unreal right now, Atlanta is .500 right now, and St Louis is the worst of those 3.

A LOT more of a long term problem with Colorado than Arizona. When you in 42 games are only 20-22, you aren't good.

0.6 in WAR(the gap between Sale and Kluber) is not that huge. At all. Sale can't slump.

Agree.

Quote:At all.

Still agree!

Quote:Sale can't slump.

Well, sure he can, if:
1) Kluber slumps
2) If Sale only slumps *a wee bit*
3) bWAR doesn't mean anything in Cy Young voting (it doesn't)
4) The Tom Tango model is remotely accurate (I dunno; it seems pretty good but it's still a behavior predictor so I wouldn't put money on it.)

Look, I'm just screwing around here. I didn't post those WAR numbers for any reason other than they (at least, the fWAR number) appear to generally see the top 4 pitchers as the same 4 we've been discussing. That's it. They're interesting, but the fact that fWAR and bWAR can sometimes be so disparate tells you that we can't rely on them TOO much.

1 thing that's amazing to me is here we are on July 17, and there are only 73 guys that are eligible for the ERA title(so at least 1 inning per game played for their team).

Only 96 guys even have 80 innings right now. And only 118 have even 70 innings. It's just a totally different era that we live in today.

Nats with the way to start the game today vs Reds. 2 guys get on then a Harper homer. Followed by a Zimmerman homer(he becomes franchise leader in homers- passes Vlad Guerrero).

The A's do need a new stadium -- or, what is more likely, an Angel Stadium-like renovation of the Coliseum into a baseball-only park -- but they can't blame the Coliseum for the fact that they are not getting enough in return in trades over the last few years.

the thing that i find remarkable is that Mike Rizzo can make trades with almost anyone. He's stolen so many trades with the Nats the last few years.

wow not only did Zimmerman break the franchise record in homers, but he also tied none other than Andre Dawson with his 7th season of 20 or more homers in a year. Pretty darn good company.

Once upon a time, Billy Beane was the guy that every other GM dreaded trading with. Now he's someone they are eager to trade with. 03-banghead
