Yep.
What a game. And the atmosphere in a sold-out Chick Evans field house.

In today's basketball world, the chance of seeing a top 20 team visiting the Convo is almost zero.

I was there. That game turned me into the college basketball fan that I still am today.

Top 20? Hell, that year's non-conference schedule included at Iowa, at Northwestern, hosting DePaul plus Southern Illinois, and Loyola.
The following year (1980-81) started off hosting Iowa, North Dakota and Loras before visiting DePaul and Southern Illinois, neutral site meetings with Northwestern and Loyola, followed by hosting Fresno State and Illinois State.
Now days with a "better" facility, we host a complete series of Lorases and perhaps visit one major name program.
Top 20? Hell it would be nice to have a non-conference schedule that didn't require google to find the city for many of Monty's opponents in recent years ala Bethune-Cookman, Saint Joseph's, Hampton, Eureka, Indiana Northwest, Roosevelt, Judson, or Elon.
Despite two straight seasons of "cupcake state" scheduling to build confidence, Monty is still trying to get above .500 versus the MAC in YEAR SIX.

Landscape of scheduling has changed pretty dramatically. Much much harder to get good opponents at your place for most mid majors. The one good that has somewhat nullified those sub div 1 games has been a pretty decent and balanced non conf schedule outside of those games and the fact the MAC has shot up in terms of strength. No bad wins in the MAC past two years

Reason enough not to renew or extend MM contract.

So is MSU finally going to play at the Convo after 6 years of rumors?

Good to hear from you, jjj. Yeah, I was there. There are some other comments about this game in the History thread. The students turned out for this game.

Was the dunk at the end near the basket by the mens locker room?
Or by the visitors locker room....I cant recall...

What was Depaul ranked at the time?? I assume they were. Had they lost yet? I don't think they had lost...because they lost prob to ND that year and first game of NCAA...

Not sure where they were ranked when they played us, but the following weekend they won at UCLA and vaulted to #1 where they stayed for the remainder of the year until they lost in the 1st round of the NCAA tourney.

RE: 1979 Depaul-NIU flashback at Chick Evans
Thanks for posting my article.
Having attended NIU games off and on since then, I have experienced nothing close to this moment.
Not only did we have an off-the-chart dunk, but there was so much suspense leading up to it, starting from the pre-game warm-ups. Everyone in the Fieldhouse was on an emotional bender for couple hours and then the payoff with Green's basket.
That 1979-80 season was special, not just for Northern, but all of college basketball. I really feel collegiate ball peaked in the late 70s and early 80s.
Being at Chick Evans added to the intimacy, sometime not found at the Convo.
Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but to me, the game of basketball itself is more sloppy and not as enjoyable to watch as it once was.
Give me a fundamentally-sound McDougal team over a Patton or Montgomery outfit any day.
