Doneal Mack was on that team as well.

Rodney Carney was from Indiana.

the OP stipulated the list should not include guys recruited by Calipari

Thank you!

And to answer the question higher up in the thread, I would NOT include David Vaughn or Keith Lee since - although technically out of state - they are from the Memphis area.

And it seems like it pretty much comes down to Kenon, Barton and Shaq Goodwin.

The point remains: unless the Memphis-area HS bb talent is really, really good (and there have been some down periods) I really don't think Tubby is going to magically land some big time out-of-state talent.

I also don't think that Larry really tried to recruit out of state guys. He had his backyard and that's where his entire focus was.

I think the successful coach is the coach that recruits the mid-south - west Memphis, north Mississippi and west Tennessee.

AND realizes you have to occasionally supplement with JCs and DI/GRAD transfers.

The good news is that Memphis HS basketball has been good for a while now and projects to be good during the length of Tubby's contract.

Go poach a second chance player or two from elsewhere and go to work.

Do you think that the Memphis HS BB talent will be enough to get to a Sweet 16 in the next couple of years?

Obviously, you're right, a grad transfer here/there (especially a big) could really make an impact.

My concern is that it could be upwards of 10 years between Sweet 16 appearances since our last one was in 2009.

I am not saying the program is on life support, but our window of opportunity is getting smaller every year. Every year with a ho-hum record and results means fewer Tiger fans and (I hate to say it) more Grizz fans.

That's kind of an unintentional loaded question.

I can find teams every year that you look up and wonder how they advanced and you can find G5 schools every year in the Sweet 16, some with no NBA players on their rosters at all. Every year, Wichita, San Diego State, Xavier, Dayton, VCU, Butler, occasionally throw in a Florida Gulf Coast.

Personally, I think they were only a few roster tweaks away from having a team capable of making the S16 this year...another rotation big and a rotation combo guard - both preferably grad transfers with solid DI experience - and they would've had a shot.

Honestly - you don't need Olajuwon and Drexler either - take two off of UCONN and we are right there. Rodney Purvis (grad transfer from NCST) and Brimah. That's what it would take on our current roster.

My question to the knowledgeable Tiger fans:

Since the Bartow era, I know we have Larry Kenon who was a big time out-of-state player, but besides Larry Kenon, can you list big time talent that came to play for the Tigers that were NOT from the area and were not recruited by Cal?

I know that CJP's big out-of-state recruits were Shaq Goodwin and Will Barton, but other than that, what is the list?

For starters, Will Barton is big time. You seem to put him on a level below Cal's guys, but he's right there with them.

Q: What do Anthony Rice, Wesley Witherspoon and Angel Garcia have in common?

A: They were all talented recruits who weren't from Memphis yet played for the Tigers. They were also recruited by JOHN CALIPARI.

In fairness, most of these guys didn't NEED to go outside of the mid-south.

Finch suffered through a couple of down periods locally - but the rest had their fair share.

The local "misses" were why the program didn't have a handful more Sweet 16s, Elite 8s and even another Final Four or two.

RE: Big time out-of-state basketball Tigers
Lee and Parks were regional recruits, so by intent, I don't think they count. Carney played HS in Indiana, but it seems he also had a Memphis connection. Vaughn was also Finch's nephew.

Recently, I'd say Geron, Dixon, Shaq, Will, DJ. A ton of guys from Cal's era. The Louisiana guys with Tic and Johnnie. Absolutely Kelly Wise and Omar.

To the OP point. You can get enough from within the city and other connections, then sprinkle in 1-2 out of area guys a year. It's not going to be Cal, but no one else is either.

With them? He over all of them now-best Tiger NBA player right now including DRose (injuries). And Cheyenne was from Westside? Definitely Memphis tho.

Historically we have been able to find PG, SG, SFs in the Memphis area but PFs and true centers are not as common. That plus quality big men are coveted by everyone out there.

Very true. Our greatest success has come when we have had good big men like Kenon, Keith Lee, Lorenzen, Vaughn and Joey Dorsey.

David Vaughn was Finch's nephew. So basically he's a local too. Where was Don Holcomb from?
