Is Tubby still our head coach...
At the start of the 2019-20 season?

That is all.

RE: Is Tubby still our head coach...
He will be 68 years old.
He will have most likely won his 600th game.
Most likely no scandals.
Most likely will have gone 20-10 (60-30 for 3 years). With our SOS for the next couple of years, that equals....not much.
Due to mediocre seasons, no NCAA appearances.
No recruiting energy or headlines.
Safe $$ is on: No

RE: Is Tubby still our head coach...
He's clearly done nothing to energize Tiger basketball. The crowd's aren't back; there's zero excitement surrounding the program.

It's not really his fault' it's just who he is.

A young, energetic coach who exuded hope and confidence would probably have the Forum rocking again with basically the same results as Tubby has particularly if he was bringing in a killer recruiting class.

The buzz around a program that's not winning 'now' is based on hope for the future. Whether or not Tubby can win big here remains to be seen. That was never the point for this season. This season was about hope for next season and he's not selling it very hard.....so the apathy continues because this team, while not horrible, is certainly not very good. Winning 20 at Memphis isn't that big a deal; many average coaches could do that here at least for awhile.

The Memphis brand is still a dumpster fire for now. If Tubby's Tigers get and stay Top 20 next year and they roll to an NCAA S16 that would inject some life back into the program. The long slow journeyman grind from the lower level of mediocrity to a higher level of mediocrity (for Tiger hoops) isn't really going to move the needle.

RE: Is Tubby still our head coach...
IF Josh Pastner could outtalent CUSA, then Tubby could have one of those kind of seasons in a down AAC if he put a team on the floor...not saying he will either, but he's obviously a better floor coach (certainly with his faults as last night proved) than a lot of guys, so if he recruits and has a standout player, anything is possible.

I'm still on the fence - he's either gonna be Rollie Massimino at UNLV - failed experiment - or Steve Fisher at San Diego State - annual NCAA team, 2 seed one year, 30 wins one year, Sweet 16, etc.

I'm willing to give him a couple of years to refill the lineup. Then I will make a determination.

So, you mean to say that we will "bitterly regret" allowing wonder boy to go to GT?, the same guy who was 5-26 against top 25, with no AAC championships, no sweet 16's, and no tournament period the past two seasons?? Just how and when does this "rueing" begin? I'll hang up and listen, this should be fun.

Not sure if he meant it as above from TubbyTime or does he mean we will bitterly regret not hiring someone else.

Letting JP go was good. He was done here. Hiring Tubby was a bad decision imo. Hired a well respected coach and "good guy". We needed a killer. We paid 3mil for a coach in his twilight. Smh.

I'm less optimistic than I was earlier in the season. I'm more apathetic about the program than I've ever been in 40 years of being a fan, but that has more to do with Josh than Tubby.

Who knows how Josh will turn out as a coach in the long run. It was absolutely the right move to let him go, he made a ton of mistakes here and did real damage to the program. But Bowen and the chase for P5 status in football did not do him any favors. With the new emphasis on football we may never again be what we once were in basketball.

RE: Is Tubby still our head coach...
I just don't think there's anything about Tubby that says "fast." Look at next year. Best case scenario would be that Dedric comes back, Azab and Chad suit up, and that Johnson (listed as combo guard) can run the point. It's still not going to be a top 5 recruiting class joining a bunch of upperclassmen who have played together for two or three years. It will be Dedric and a bunch of blue collar journeymen, but at least none of them will have to play 40 minutes a game.

Cal's methods equated to "fast." Fast and loose maybe, but he reloaded as everyone used to say. Doing things the old fashioned way of bringing in good but not great players and keeping them around for four years so they can eventually comprise a good team -- that takes at least two or three years before you get to the level we think we should be at as an average.

Memphis fans want to be ranked, play top competition, beat teams with a number beside their names, and make noise in the NCAA tournament. I know that's what I want, but I don't see it happening in a year or two -- maybe never with Tubby, I don't really know. But I do know that I'd rather have him as a coach than Josh, so we are headed in the right direction, in my opinion. Not a homerun hire by any stretch of the imagination, but someone who can end the mass exodus of players from the team, speak intelligently at press conferences, garner the respect of the players, and prepare a foundation for whoever replaces him that will be better than the one he was left with.

Now, if we landed the next Derrick Rose for next year, forget about waiting two or three years. But that's not happening. There are other things that aren't happening either -- probation, coach-trashing tweets on the way out the door, tendinitis, reputation as a bunch of thugs, etc. We tend to forget the negative stuff we're missing.

That's unfortunate because the majority of the fan base isn't going to change to accommodate Tubby's style - unless he is winning big enough.

What's the buyout after the '18-'19 season? I think he'll do ok, but even if he doesn't there's always that issue.

This program can't wait that long; a couple of years to get new players, 2-3 yrs to turn those recruits into a good team. 4-5 years of lost revenue (depending on how many donor sear buyers we can get back) of $5-$15M per year.

As I have said, Pastner should have been removed after 14-15 season. He was losing fan base and huge amounts of revenue then.

Around $6.5M.

Good, fair assessment except for player respect. Not everyone has bought in. Know that to be a fact.

Who knows? Will Andy be at Old Miss? Will Ollie be at UConn? Will Rick be at UTK? Coaching tenure is measured in weeks.

Come to think of it, let's watch Rick. He's also an experienced coach. UTK seems to have improved this year. Supposedly a bubble team, though I doubt it. They're a year further into their experiment than we are.

You surely don't believe that. The FEF is not rocking this year with this schedule and these results, even if _______ (Cal, Buzz, Archie, Luke Walton - certainly not Forbes, Kennedy). Only way this season would be rocking with this schedule is if we were like 24-3.

Fuente was a youngish coach who exuded confidence. If you met him, you knew he was going to be a winner. However, he wasn't necessarily an energizer or marketer. When we proved we were winners, people started coming. And we're still on the increase.

Less about the coach playing to the fans. More about the team play and winning.
