41 percent of all incoming freshmen transfer by end of sophomore year
This is not an NIU problem or a Monty based phenomenon but, rather, appears to be a nationwide epidemic: not confined to NIU. 41% means over nearly 1000 such players or about 3 for each team every two year cycle. NIU is certainly not immune and is not exactly out of the norm for this transfer culture. Many of these players twill play on two, three, four different AAU teams and on sometimes four high schools and then multiple colleges. For mid major kids, transferring "up" is like the one and done guys at the P5 schools. Sports Illustrated called it "up-transferring." One NCAA compliance officer said "the idea of honing your skills at a smaller program and then up-transferring is likened it to a "market correction" —and is becoming more common.

In many ways this has become the American way: If you work at a smaller internet start-up and Google comes calling because of the exemplary work you’ve been doing, you move to Google. College basketball involves college kids, who are notoriously fickle, ever-changing, growing people who want to make their own path.

So many players, even here at NIU, believe they are going to the NBA and think they are better than NIU so want to seek greener pastures at the first opportunity. When they develop such attitudes, they are difficult to coach.

There are many reasons speculated for this onslaught of kids transferring:

Players are dissatisfied with playing time and think they will be utilized in a greater capacity elsewhere.

Kids looking for greater media exposure and a bigger fan base

AAU "coaches" and street agents are in a kid's ear that he can find him bigger and better (as it makes that "coach's" resume look better. An Indianapolis AAU "coach" said "like it's a free-agent market after the Final Four."

Power 5 programs cannibalize G5 programs as a regular part of their recruiting to fill spots when they see talent they missed coming out of h.s.

5th year eligibility for transfers who graduate being able to play immediately encourages kids to explore their options for higher level programs.

RE: 41 percent of all incoming freshmen transfer by end of sophomore year
Universities and students have lost sight of their core mission. Provide an education which will enable the student to be a productive member of society. It's all about diversity and experience now and not about the outcome.

Several years ago someone at UB got it in their head to nip this in the bud and a retention effort took root. The "Finish in four" got a big push, hoping that getting kids out in four years would raise overall retention rates.

Quote:https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016...h-4-pledge

UB allows incoming students to sign a pledge. The promise to register for classes on time, follow a structured curricular plan and talk with an academic adviser at least once a semester.

They are also given an assessment to help them choose a major and career path as part of the pledge.

Right now about 3/4 of UB students sign the pledge.

Finish in 4 includes the university's promise that students who meet their obligations but do not graduate in four years may finish their degree at the university without paying any more tuition and fees.

The idea was, promise to do all the right things, we will provide you support, and if after doing everything right you still don't graduate in four years then the remaining time is paid for by the university.

Students who don't sign the pledge still get access to all the same services (advising, assessment, and degree path planning), but they won't get a free 5th year if they fail to graduate in 4.

Everything together costs the university about 2.5 million a year.

Since this all started in 2012 the percent of students who graduate on time has went from 35% to 55%. As a school about 75% of students who enroll get a degree withing 6 years.

It's really helped minority students, they've seen a 20% rise in 4 year graduation rates.

Is NIU looking at something like this?

Oh my bad, is this 41% just student athletes? Yea UB has had a real problem with transfers as of late.

RE: 41 percent of all incoming freshmen transfer by end of sophomore year
This is why you used to see more midmajors in the tourney 10+ years ago. Today the P5 programs just poach transfers and get away with it. Even ISU who is currently last 4 in has been poached quite a bit (Reggie Lynch & Minnesota, Nic Moore & SMU, etc).

On top of that mid-to-low players are just transferring a lot in general, ever since this social media/technology age exploded.

This number doesn't mean much without context. There are 350+ teams in college basketball. Of those 41%, how many are from good programs? How many are important players like Wilson and Nader were?

I would bet you the good programs hold onto their guys, but I could be wrong.

No. 1 -- Is this simply proof that this generation of "ballers" are more self-absorbed, narcissistic, less team-oriented and deluded? Yes
No. 2 -- Do P5 conferences have the same problem? Yes and no. In terms of numbers the answer to question 1 is the reason it also happens to P5 conference schools. However, the no answer to question 2 is because at the P5 level it's like reshuffling, they gain what they lose. For schools like NIU, the impact is far more noticeable. I agree with 7 that the better schools hold on to their top scorers but may lose the border-line starter / key reserve. The key to 7's point is that the ppg. / rpg. / etc. of transfers from Monty's program are starters and go on to contribute to the next program.
No. 3 -- There has never been a Huskie coach who continually uses "we're young" as an explanation or excuse as often as Monty. dekalb222, you annually forecast players who will leave / should leave / should see diminished playing time the following year; then what does that say about recruiting? Either Monty needs to find better fits, quit turning potential stars -- as you so often label them when coming here -- into disgruntled players, or at the least pick kids he can coach up. Since you've got time to research this, exactly how many players have completed a four-year career here under Monty?
No. 4 -- None of this matters because unfortunately Monty has had his contract needlessly extended on more than one occasion and we're now stuck with him until 2020-21.

Since Monty's been here probably the best players that have left are: Nader- he had many issues and proceeded to get suspended at Iowa St. Springs-this should've never happened I blame Springs and Coach. Wilson- wait and see where he is next year and it will probably let people know why he's not here anymore. This was not a Monty problem. Bowie- he was injured, I'm pretty sure both parties were fine with this move.

So you are okay with NBA talent leaving?

+1

He makes Wilson and Porter look like positive roll models.
