I am not sure Memphis HS basketball has the coaching it needs to develop a big time talent into a superstar recruit anymore. There just isn't enough invested in developing HS coaches in this age of school accountability. Its gonna be hard for inner city programs to attract really good coaches, they'd have too many school/teaching responsibilities. East is a unique set up with Penny, I thinks he's really just volunteering officially, not the actual coach on record there.
I think Tubby has the coaching chops and pedigree to attract big time talent. He does need a mouthpiece/recruiter (WWW? LOL!!!), but where could we find that person?
I think a "Ram in the Bush" can be Team Penny, especially if he keeps taking East to play in national tourneys and winning the state. His Team Penny AAU squad can be that national recruiting tool Tubby needs.

For that matter, we didn't win the game. But good times none the less. We can get back to that, and we will.
Nothing is guaranteed and I seriously doubt Tubby has the drive, focus, and d edgy to put a top 10-15 team on the floor.
If it happens I think it'll have to be under a different coach.
If he has the kids he can coach them to be a threat...But can he get the kids...
We may be counting on Penny and Lawson to deliver us the goods in recruiting.
It all depends on the local Memphis HS basketball talent level. Our best players almost universally have come from Memphis or the immediate area, with the exception of DRose, CDR and Joey Dorsey.
CJP's big out-of-Memphis gets were Shaq Goodwin and Will Barton. Tic Price was dreadful and Larry's big gets were from Memphis as well.
What I wouldn't give to have a Joey Dorsey on this squad.

If you want win, you get guys like this. You don't rely on Memphis talent.
I agree....but what are the chances of Tubby getting those kinds of guys to Memphis?
DRose types of players won't go to Memphis, he went for Cal (I know, Captain Obvious). CDR really, really improved over the course of 3 years and Joey did as well. I could potentially see Tubby maybe landing a CDR and/or a Joey, but it's going to be tough if there are not from the Memphis area.
Cal was really, really good at getting us on ESPN. Even when we were going to NITs, we were still on ESPN. That type of exposure is very helpful for recruiting out of state, etc.
And let's not forget WWW either.
CDR and Joey Dorsey weren't highly sought after if I remember correctly. Hate to water down your point because we did bring in big big talent in those days: Shawn Williams, D-Wash, DeJuan Wagner, Amari Stoudamire was commited then went to NBA, etc.
But everyone of those players came because of Cal, it's that simple. The big time out-of-state talent that comes TO Memphis that is not Cal related is a pretty short list.
Well, not EVERY one. We had a good shot at Shawne anyway, although some were pushing him out of town. And Dajuan came because of his dad.
I hear what you're saying. We're probably not going to get a top 10 guy who doesn't have a connection to the city. But we can still get some really good players from outside of Memphis. That's all we should expect and we should be happy when it happens.
I long for the day when Memphis plays BB in an OCA & plays FB in an OCS - but not likely in my lifetime if ever. Too many university supporters with conflicted politics.
If it ever gets close to that level again, can we please for the love of everything that is holy, get rid of the jazz lounge portion of the band and either a) play actual music over the sound system or b) play music like a real band should.
It's been that loud in the early 90s at the pyramid. Penny hardaway and his crew were very fun to watch even for non tiger fans, they were playing above the rim, throwing alley oops from half court, posterizing fools under the rim, making noise nationally knocking off top teams, etc. I still think the tigers would have challenged for the national championship in penny's 2nd year if david vaughn didn't blow out his knee.
I posted this video once. I'll do it again. It's very long but it's awesome especially for those who never saw this period in tiger basketball. Skip to 15 minute mark if you're impatient. I promise you this video is worth watching. Younger fans who didn't see this era should definitely watch this video.
The best part is we didn't get caught cheating and the coach didn't leave us looking like some dummies. Penny hardaway has always represented "memphis state" very well. Imo, he is our most important tiger, and we should always let him know that.

I agree. Penny with a healthy Vaughn as a sophomore would be a great team IF they had a point guard (that problem sounds familiar?). I remember getting knocked out of the Tourney Penny's second year by Western KY because we had no PG. Leon???? They had went to elite 8 as first year players with Tony Madlock at point.
Vaughn was terrific as a freshman and Penny had to sit out his first year so he was really a freshman in playing time. If you compare the athleticism of that team to this year's it's laughable. Vaughn would have been one of all time greats with no injury; he still ranks very highly. Two huge putbacks in NCAA: as a freshman he tipped one in vs Ark to put us in elite 8 and as a Senior, he also had a last second tip in vs Purdue to put us in S16 vs Ark. I was 10 rows away from the goal in Austin and had a birds eye view of that tip in. He actually pushed Purdue guy in the back very hard to get rebound. Refs missed it.
Those were the days. I remember telling everyone during the 2008 season when the whole group never missed a game that these were the golden years of Tiger BB and I might not see another era like that in my lifetime. So, I'm like you: I long for the days of great Memphis Tiger basketball!

GREAT video. Just hearing the intensity of the crowd just gives me chills.
You just won't get that kind of intensity game after game unless your team is a consistent top 5 program OR you play before a loyal fan base in your own house. Not in the Grizzlies house & not before just BB fans. We need Memphis Tiger fans in our own OC arena. IMO, we will never again see Calipari level support and enthusiasm for the Tigers in the FedEx Forum unless we have a Calipari level (top 5) program or we play before a Tiger-loyal crowd in an OC arena with 2-3K students in the house & otherwise filled with Tiger-loyal fans. I remember Al McGuire saying Memphis was the toughest place to play in the nation - before 11K in the MSC with students on the floor behind one goal about 6 ft from the floor & the place packed with TIGER fans. And the Tigers had this type support even when they weren't Calipari level.

Thanks for a great post CBM, got goose bumps just watching it. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully, the FEF will rock like that again. I think it will, and I'll be there when it happens. GO TIGERS!!!!

It's happening but they call it football these days!
Memphis will never play for the national championship in football.
Never.
You're probably right, but it sure as hell is fun to go out, tailgate and watch our Tigers play a little football (really good football last few years and only getting better). If every school's fans attended games just based on their team winning a national championship, then nobody would attend the games. As I said, Tiger football is fun, national championship or not.

K2, I don't know what type business you're in, but if the Grizz were smart, they'd hire you as their promotional manager, you'd make a great one.
Thanks Oats!
And I'd nominate you to be president of the Highland Hunnert if I had a vote.
Thanks K2, but nah, too much work. I'll just continue being just a plain ole Tiger fan, attending all home football games (2 road games per year) and all basketball home games (never miss). BUT again, thanks for the compliment and vote of confidence.
