Are those the independents in 2017?
Whatever else anyone says, this isn't good for JMU.
Too big of a deal being made of lower tier schools going to FBS. Liberty will never compete for a national championship, ODU will never compete for a national championship, UMass, Coastal Carolina, etc., etc. They never even go a sniff on one in FCS. UVA's not ever winning one in football; Tech will be relevant every so often.
So does that mean we shouldn't try?

We are never going to be Harvard, Princeton, etc. on the academic side. Does that mean we should stop trying to continue to improve our quality and reputation? Seems to be contrary to our goal of being a national university.

Liberty to FBS?

Doesn't matter. It is Alger and Bourne's fault that Liberty is now G5. Alger and Bourne are also responsible for the Falcons' Super Bowl collapse, flooding in California, and the extremely long wait for a table at the Harrisonburg Texas Roadhouse.
They are also responsible for the Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead and Shooter McGavin blowing a 4 stroke lead on the back 9.

So academically we remained ranked in the top 10 southern regional schools w/ Berry College while Liberty is recognized as a national university...
Athletically, we competing against FCS schools who average 8,000 fans a game while Liberty will have the opportunity to prove itself against FBS programs...
Our academics and overall athletic program may be better than Liberty but they have positioned themselves to have more opportunities in the future where our ceiling is much lower both academically and athletically.

Alex, I'll take 3) The admin says nothing, full on mute mode during Convo and COB fund raising initiatives, for $1000

We were the ones who wanted out of the first game of a 2 home and 2 away contract. The game we wanted out of was set for 2008, the first year of the contracted games. We wanted out that season because our students would not be there (some kind of Fall Break back then). MM also wanted out because he felt we were going to be good (which we were) and the game was scheduled for late October. This was one of those allowable 12 game season's. MM wanted to have two off weekends rather than one.
EW and JB explained to me that to get out of that game we had to agree to give them an extra home game. This gift of a game to be played in Lynchburg has yet to happen. We had it scheduled in 2015, but we negotiated a deal with SMU and LU allowed us to reschedule again. So now we twice have gone to them to cancel a game. It is now slated for 2019. LU has been very honorable throughout this deal. MM and JB in my opinion were stupid for not playing them as the original contract had stated back in 2008. These are the facts.
Thanks for that update!

What? I mean, we could be Harvard/Princeton if we got the talent and students. There's nothing preventing us from doing it like there is going FBS (no conf invite or going independent). This is a straw man.

Comparing us to the Ivies in academics has some relevance, but to make the analogy, you have to include equal statements. Ivies have the advantage of time, money, tradition, etc. Going FBS, especially as an independent, is like JMU throwing money at a new law school with no support from the state and to the detriment of other programs in order to be "big time." It may raise our reputation over the course of many years and help with things like endowment if successful, but it could also lead to being part of a lower tier that pumps out a product no one wants or needs while hurting what is good about the school. To me, one of JMU's strong suits is the focus on undergrad and I would hate to see that changed in an effort to be something that we are not. I see the same for football. If we have a legit opportunity for advancement--take it--but don't make a move just to say you are competing. There is nothing wrong with focusing on undergrads and there is nothing wrong with FCS.

Except that we are freakish outliers compared to most of the fCS...and except that ou prez has a clearly stated goal to be national university (that doesn't forsake undergrads)
