Gopher Illustrated reports that North Dakota will be invited to the Big Ten Hockey
This is burning up Gopher Puck Live, but a report on Gopher Illustrated says UND will be offered Big Ten Hockey this summer. If UND doesn't accept, the Big Ten will offer Minn-Duluth or Omaha. Apparently, the AAU requirement will be waived and no other Big Ten schools will offer hockey in the near future. The same source was the first to report that Fleck will accept the Gophers job.

UND has been the leader in hockey attendance for some years, as Wisconsin no longer draws as well. UMINN and Wisconsin badly need the former rival who brings fans, as their games now are such low crowd energy. In the past week, a UND-Minnesota game in Las Vegas sold out in minutes, and UND brought impressive numbers to MSG in a face off with BC, and held up to 70% of the tickets in the last Frozen Four in Tampa. Our fans travel for hockey more than any school.

If this is offered, don't see any way that UND would turn it down, even if we get a lousy TV deal from the Big Ten Network. Thought our future in hockey was tied to Omaha and Denver and maybe Ariz St. Guess the Gophers and Badgers miss our fans. Have been conference mates with all the Big Ten hockey schools except Penn St (Ohio St is in our women's league).

Maybe even a conference tournament will return to the X in St Paul with fans.

This more than makes up for any move by other sports to Slummit.

Wow.

This would be like if Cincinnati was offered a FB Only by the B12 out of the blue.

Gopher Illustrated is a pay site, so didn't link it. Also, Notre Dame is not AAU, so a UND move wouldn't set a precedent.

Wow. Pretty impressive what goes on in North Dakota as far as hockey and NDSU FB. Gotta be some of the best fans in the country.

If I remember correctly the B1G turned down ASU recently. Maybe someday they will invite Omaha as well since that is big 10 country anyway and they bring a nice crowd as well. Denver is just a long way away.

If UND leaves the NCHC, could see this happening to the rest of western hockey:

Would the B1G ever consider adding UConn for Hockey?

The Big Ten needs eight for scheduling, not seven. Possible but UCONN fans have always said it's an all or nothing deal. The MSG appearance by UND proved that it can deliver there, when it was previously thought that only some Hockey East schools can deliver those types of numbers.

I suspect fans might not be making those decisions. I understand UND performed well in MSG but that may not be sustainable on a long term basis. At some point schools like UConn might make sense with so many B1G alum in the area.

UConn is nestled in the mountains of New England.

Not too many B1G alums up there.

I believe we were discussing MSG, NYC, and Boston. And yes there are plenty of B1G alum in those areas.

I can assure you that there are no mountains in Connecticut unless you are an eastern tenderfoot. Those of us in the Mountain time zone know what real mountains look like. From a mountain perspective Connecticut is like a poor mans black hills with no mt rushmore, bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, or mountain goats.

Always thought that UND was against the Summit because being associated with Denver and Omaha in it would allow schools like NDSU or even IPFW and IUPUI to force hockey members to adjoin that sport into the conference and start it themselves. That wouldn't be possible now.

Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins don't get any money from the Big Ten Network from what I understand. They do get to broadcast their home Big Ten games on the network of their choosing and keep the money. In Notre Dames case, it's the NBC Sports Network.

There had been rumors about UND doing a big deal with Fox Sports North. Maybe this is the answer.

So who gets North Dakota's vacant spot? BGSU? Arizona St? A Minnesota school?

That's really interesting. I didn't realize you get to keep the rights to the home games for yourself. Lots of different directions to go with content like that. Will be interesting to see the $ amount they get for it.

Well nothing is final. Without UND, the conference tournament becomes almost bare. The link earlier outlines a reconfigured WCHA and CCHA if UND is gone. Hockey fans like to travel to opposing barns, and that's not possible cheaply with the current alignment.

Minn St-Mankato applied earlier, but was turned down as was Ariz St, which still doesn't have a decent arena.

ASU would be a mistake. Take those recruits used to cuddling with chubby ugly pale girls to stay warm all winter and show them a tanned up sexycoed at ASU and they won't be able to sign up for the scholarship fast enough. Seriously, unless you are going to the NHL choosing 4 years at Minnesota or Arizona is a no brainer. ASU would steal recruits.

Most of the recruits get NHL scouting before they even sign. The top.draft.pick recently was from.Arizona, who played his late teens in the Midwest to get better development. Ariz St is getting recruits, but it's too young a program to win. California has developed into a recruiting hotbed for hockey.

lol. You are contradicting yourself here when you say the babes are a deciding factor for looking at a school when on another thread you say born a husker always a husker.

What if you were raised diehard UND hockey? Would you consider Arizona State for the sexy girls as you mentioned? Obviously its not as simple as waive the P5 card and recruiting is automatic.

Comparing NEbraska football fans to ASU hockey recruits is not much of a comparison. Nice try thought. LOL. Try to hide it better next time.

I think a kid who grew up in Minnesota or North Dakota would be happy to live 4 years in Arizona playing hockey and going to school. IF you feel differently you're entitled to your opinion.

You probably didn't' get much in college as you dont' seem to understand the difference in Minnesota women and ASU women. ASU women are hard to beat and Minnesota weather sucks donkey. If you are not NHL bound I thin "ASU could steal recruits from schools in cold locations with ugly women.

ND has a separate home hockey contract with NBC Sports.

All ND home hockey games are televised there.

That will continue when ND hockey joins the Big Ten next year.
