SEC expansion....Mr. SEC's blueprint
Mr. SEC's exhaustive research on SEC expansion gives us these rankings on realistic SEC candidates (lower ranking is better)
B1G and ACC schools have been removed as they are not realistic SEC candidates at this time.

1-Texas A&M
4-Texas
6-Oklahoma
10-Missouri
16-UConn
17-Baylor
17-Kansas
17-Texas Tech
20-Oklahoma State
21-Cincinnati
22-TCU
24-West Virginia
25-East Carolina
27-Iowa State
33-Kansas State
34-Navy
35-South Florida

When this research was done A&M and Missouri had not joined the SEC, but two top ten picks none the less.
While this may not be perfect it would give you an idea of where and in what order that the SEC may be looking IF the expansion bug bit the boys from Birmingham again.

I revisited Mr. SEC's process a while ago. The numbers would change slightly because he valued new markets and population (and thus duplicates like Texas/Texas Tech would lose some of their value). But I think this is a good overview.

I am surprised that schools like Iowa State/Kansas State/WVU are below a school like Cincy, and Baylor is probably anathema right now.

However other than that, this list is not that surprising.

1) Texas even as a duplicate has value (I'm not convinced with Texas A&M in the fold, but I know it is the best option out there).
2) OK as next has been obvious for a long time.
3) There is a reason UConn/Kansas to the Big 10 has been floated, but also a reason why the SEC desires Kansas too.

It should be noted that when Mr. SEC did the list he did not discriminate for cultural fit which Slive stated would be one of the top criteria in SEC selection. Sankey has upheld this position. Nor, did Mr. SEC give weight to content value, or the value as content multiplier. Clearly with the changes coming in the industry in delivery models content value will replace market value a the leading criteria. Texas deserves its ranking in this list on content, and content multiplier, abilities.

It should further be noted that some schools on this list no longer have the ability to add to an SEC value which now delivers 40.4 million to a member school. In fact there may only be two schools here that would. If we only landed one of them and there was a desire to move to 16 the second choice would depend on the first and their respective values would shift based on that first addition.

For instance if we landed Texas we would need no other Texas school. The second choice might be Kansas or West Virginia. If the school was Oklahoma then Kansas, T.C.U. or West Virginia or Oklahoma State might be considered.

Kansas is still a cultural outlier but they are a brand.

Anyway I have place in bold the only schools on this list that could come into play IMO. And to be quite frank there probably is no movement at all without either OU or UT or both. The only other remote possibility would be T.C.U. to actually be in the DFW market.

This Mr. SEC seems like a pretty smart guy.

Can't fault a guy for trying! But no.

I wish I could link the article, but I believe that the Mr. SEC web site has been taken down.
The series of articles was called "expansion by the numbers".

Yeah, apparently he sold the site and retired from the college sports blogging business. The site is now kaput.

I wish he was still around. He had great connections and interesting insights.

I'm pretty sure that he and the OKTC guy (Clay Travis) were getting their info straight from the conference office. Travis leaked the market concept and introduced the idea of N.C. State and Virginia Tech as the next SEC additions (when nobody and I mean nobody was considering them). Then Mr. SEC sold the formula for riches by ranking the schools by market size. Brands were excluded and the focus was getting one of the top two state schools in the market desired to drive subscription fees. Travis then pushed the amount of money we would make. Travis, who had SEC office connections, then got catapulted for his efforts into FOX where his tune changed and Mr. SEC drifted away just as surely as the market concept which I fought from day 1.

You can't tell me that ignoring the natural fit of some schools, and that having a focus that matches the SEC makes for a less desirable candidate than some school that we have nothing in common with but which has a nice market.

Those two guys floated the trial balloon of N.C. State and Va Tech, then sold it, and then slinked away to other things when 2 years worth of their lives were spent selling an idea that was D.O.A. to the parties that mattered. This is what corporate test marketers do when they want to vet an idea to make sure the public doesn't reject it outright. It's also great cover for the guys at ESPN or the SEC or ACC or Big 12 when they need cover for a concept that even they think might be flawed.

Those were the days! Conspiracy theories, trial balloons that had some real forethought to them, and downright skullduggery marked expansion talk in the past. Now for the most part it's all corporate.
