RE: ESPN Makes Lot of Money Off of UConn Women's Basketball So Why Not Back UConn Into P5
Why would they. UConn has nowhere to go and ESPN controls all the content for pennies on the dollar. All it would do is cost ESPN money.

The psychology of a UConn fan is an interesting one. What I see is a school who made poor decisions and is now dealing with the consequences of choosing to play FCS until 1990 and building a football stadium a half an hour from campus. Those are UConn's choices. Those choices combined with limited fan support for Football has turned out to be a huge liability in realignment for UConn. But UConn can't blame ESPN or anyone else for those choices. Better to take responsibility than to constantly play the victim or expect a corporation to throw you a 25 million dollar a year lifeline when they have no reason to.

That being said I'd love to see BYU and UConn added to the Big 12.

A few thoughts:

(1) Despite conspiracy theories and quotes taken out of context, ESPN actually has little direct influence on who conferences want to add in realignment. ESPN's influence is based upon what they're willing to pay for a particular league, which is a bit different. It's in the interest of ESPN to pay as little as possible for every conference, so they actually DON'T want consolidated power. On the flip side, the conferences want as much consolidated power so that ESPN effectively *has* to pay them a high price (or else they'll walk to Fox or NBC or someone else).

(2) The fact that UConn women's basketball might make money for ESPN is unfortunately (for UConn) fairly meaningless. ESPN also made a ton off of Boise State football games over the past decade under MWC contracts that were peanuts and that was actually in the sports of football that really matters in realignment. You can also see where high profile teams in "cheap" leagues provide a lot of potential profit for ESPN - see Gonzaga in the WCC. It's in the interest of ESPN to keep those schools EXACTLY where they are in those inexpensive conferences, especially when it comes to basketball. (At least in football, there's an argument that there's a multiplier effect when you have a P5 vs. P5 matchup, so a school moving up to the P5 level dramatically improves the quality of that school's "inventory" in football compared to basketball where the league doesn't matter as much and performance is much more variable from year-to-year.)

I don't agree with you much, but I'll concur that the fact that UConn didn't have FBS football until this century is a VERY underrated aspect in analyzing the school's realignment prospects. I've been saying that for years. Unfortunately for UConn, there's nothing that can solve that particular problem except for time.

Now, it's a bit harsh to say that UConn made poor decisions. To the contrary, I think UConn actually recognized that FBS football was going to be even more important compared to basketball sooner than many other schools, which is why they decided to upgrade. They did as much as a school could realistically do on a unilateral basis to improve its standing over the past 20 years. The problem that UConn encountered is that they might have naively assumed that their "old money" status in basketball would carry over to their football program, whereas the P5 leagues still ended up looking at UConn as a "noveau riche" football program that has less top level history than schools like UCF and Boise State... and P5 leagues have shown again and again that they only want "old money" (even if that old money is terrible on-the-field like Rutgers). Once again, only time can solve that issue for UConn (and they might not have that time with the P5/G5 gap widening further every year).

WHO GIVES A SH_T

I watch a lot of sports on TV and enjoy it a lot. But if the day ever comes that I'm so desperate for something to do, that I watch women's basketball, do me a favor and put a bullet in my head and put me out of my misery.

The real poor decisions UConn made were naming Paul Pasqualoni and Bob Diaco as the football head coaches -- during a crucial time in realignment consideration. One was a burnout and the other was too inexperienced. I admire Frank the Tank and his superb blog, so it's an honor to be an original poster where he contributes. I also respect any OU fan who wants to see UConn in the B12. But UConn is a great fit for the ACC -- and can help them out with the TV network. UConn would fit into the B10, too, and to a lesser degree with the B12. I remain confident that UConn will get back some of its football strength with the return of Randy Edsall.

The Big 10 Network is controlled by Fox with a 51% interest in the network. ESPN certainly has no interest in UCONN going to the Big 10.

Would the AAC keep UConn as an fball-only member if they did in fact join the Big East? Would keep them at an even 12 in fball and 10 OLY. But would Cincinnati ask for the same deal?

If AAC wont keep them as fball-only member, they need to swallow their pride and align with UMass as not just a package deal for fball teams, but turn it into a rivalry (i mean if they did UCF, why not UMass). Both of them then try and get the MAC to let them in or CUSA. Otherwise, independance or CAA for UConn football

Fox would LOVE UCONN WBB content.
