MyBB Could UCONN women go Independent and win the NCAA Tournament?
Here's a crazy hypothetical for the realignment nuts:
If Uconn went Independent in ALL sports next season, and the women basketball team went undefeated, got an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament and won it.
1. How much money would UConn earn for winning the tournament?
2. Has an Independent team in basketball ever gone to and won the NCAA tournament?
3. Does the NCAA allow this/has it ever happened? (Going Independent in all sports)
That would be an amazing thing for sports fans to watch. Even if they tried it for 1 season..after everything they've accomplished, this would be an amazing way to say they are the most dominant college program in any sport by far.
Cheers!

This is actually a better discussion than UConn joining the NBE.

So now we are at keeping hockey where its' at. Indy for FB and WBB. NBE for everything else?

A bunch of teams were independent in basketball in the 70s, though few in the past 20 years. I can't imagine why the NCAA would care if you went 100 percent independent, so long as you were meeting whatever requirements were established. Of course, scheduling would be a bear in sports like basketball and baseball (it's one thing to gin up a 12-game football schedule, it's another to get 28 basketball or 50-some baseball games when you're the only independent around). But if whoever (I always imagined Texas going this route, though that presumed a wildly popular Longhorn Network) could make it work, I would think they could.

As to UConn women's basketball: By brand alone, they would find it easier to get games than any other program that were to try that, but even then, how hard is it to get a full February when everyone is in the teeth of the conference schedule? Obviously OOC games happen, but to get eight or so? That'd be a tall order even for them.

But if they could, they'd probably still be the dominant force in women's basketball and would still win their titles, conference or no.

Indy for everything but Hockey. They could stay where they currently play in that sport.

Cheers!

I realize it would be tough to schedule in basketball, but if anyone could do it, I would say Uconn women could do it. It would be something I think college sports fans would love to follow.

Brands are as valuable as the current group of young people.

Old Dominion and Louisiana Tech were once women's basketball powerhouses. If you are the best women's high school player, are you considering these programs?

Modern conference realignment has been the stated reason on why the LT women faded from prominence...

So- a school like Tennessee should always be a powerhouse?

As I understand it, you have to play m/w basketball, baseball, volleyball, track, etc... in your primary conference unless it isn't offered by that league. Basketball is the foundation upon which all multi-sport conferences are built, so I'm afraid the answer to the OP's inquiry is no.

I've never heard how much women's tournament credits are worth.

Well, whatever the case, I think Uconn will leave the AAC.

Cheers!

It can't be very much, or it wouldn't be so hard to find the answer to that question. As I understand it, UConn reported $4 million in total revenue for its women's team in 2014-15. That includes ticket sales, parking and concessions, advertising, all media payments and tournament distributions. By contrast, the team cost $6.7 million to operate, for a whopping $2.7 million loss despite drawing big crowds at home.

I don't believe any women's basketball team in the NCAA breaks even. Going independent isn't going to change that.

Well Uconn has to split their NCAA earnings with their AAC conference mates. How much would an Indy make for winning the whole thng?

Cheers!

Great question. I know a conference gets huge money or "units" for winning an NCAA tournament game. That's why the AAC got more money paid to it then any other conference last year for old NCAA units earned. A lot of the money came from units owed from the old big east, and UCONN winning in 2014. The money gets dispersed over a 6 year period I think. A fb natty would probably be paid right after. Imagine Notre Dame winning one without having to share the money with a conference?

Cheers!

That would be pretty impressive for ND or BYUl to win a fb natty as an indy and keep the $.

I suspect the WBB "units" are much smaller but if Uconn could keep them all it might be worth something.
