RE: STF Talks Group of 5 Playoff again.....
STF can't even figure out to get 50 students to show up for a basketball game.

I hate to say it but Frazier seems to be talking like his back is against the wall. When you take the current state of NIU and its finances into account where will he get more money?

He should be teaming up with NIU administration in figuring out how to get the student enrollment back up and that's where he can make some more money. NIU had over 25k students when I was there. I don't know what the student athletic fee is now but $700 x 7,000 students is worth $4.9 million. There's his money.

Technically we should already be FCS if the NCAA followed its own guidelines on attendance. Last year the avg niu home attendance was 11,019. That made them the 123rd worst attended team out of 128. In 2015 att. was 13,942. 2014 was 13,563. Per the NCAA, you have a 2 year window to make 15,000 in attendance at least once or you can be dropped to FCS. It's never really enforced but Frazier knows this is one of the most apathetic fan bases in the country. I'd like to blame it on "Chicago being a pro football city", but NU and U of I have had consistent attendance figures as of late. Approx same attendance in '16 as in '12. Which is 72% of max cap. Over the last 2 years we are at 50%. Toledo has averaged right around 20k for 6 years straight. This is your have and have-nots. NIU has some great fans, but just not enough of them. At least not in the last 3 years. I don't fault Frazier for this. The team did the heavy lifting in 2011,12,13,14. They won. The fans needed to pay that back in 2014,15 and 16. They did not. I can't for the life of me figure out why the huge drop off in attendance. But you can't base your attendance on having a 12 win team every season.

If attendance goes down any further next year, what would you expect the team to do?? Continue an FBS program on 10k in attendance?

Just to cap this off, 9 of the 20 lowest team attendance #s last year are from the MAC. Zero from AAC. 1 from MWC. The have and have-nots.

Just to emphasize what Frazier is dealing with for a fan base. Here is the winning percentage over the last 3 seasons for 10 lowest teams in attendance in 2016.(3 seasons because that's where NIUs attendance #s started to drop)

.333 ball st
.222 n.mex
.250 fl.atl.
.486. Akron
.228 Kent
.600 NIU
.388 Idaho
.270 Lou.mon.
.250 char.
.222 mass

Try and take that to your board of directors and ask for expansion money.

Well instead of blaming fans, I think his best course of action would be to do his job, continue scheduling upgrades, and fight the ESPN deal which has shredded our fanbase

And yet people will still blame Frazier for 100% of attendance issues. The biggest irony i find is we have a fan base who loves the montra "the hard way", yet many of those same fans want to be wooed just to attend a game as if they were a 5 star recruit.

The Orange Bowl may end up being the worst thing that ever happened to this program. It did zero to attract better talent in staff or players, yet it raised fan expectations to arrogant and unattainable levels. We've gone "NIU to the BIG XII" to "NIU to the MVC" in 24 months. And it's somehow all Fraiers fault. FYI- Comphere has lowered East Carolinas attendance by almost 15% while team wins have gone from 10 to 8 to 5 to 3. Yeah...we'd be sitting pretty if he stayed.

The ESPN deal has devastated MAC fan bases, everything else in my eyes is secondary.

No denying it has hurt NIU. But can you explain to me why Toledo has averaged 19k @ home for weeknight maction games over the last two seasons? I had no idea Toledo had temps in the 70s in November. I must remember to vacation there over thanksgiving break. Or could it just be they have a better fan base? It's ok to say it. You won't turn to stone.

Couldn't agree more. I think an upgraded stadium is obviously 100 percent necessary. But what also is necessary is a fan base that doesn't suck. We don't have a fan base that doesn't suck right now.

It's a two way street The MAC has shot itself in the foot with the ESPN deal. I don't blame fans for that. MAC front office leadership and ADs made decision to forget about the fans and the fans left for it.

To be fair these issues go deeper than just football. Though I agree, the MAC deal destroyed fanbases around the MAC.

Toledo having a REAL skybox with a huge indoor club section on top of their location IN a Metro area is the difference IMO.

Note the difference...
Your team has a November weeknight game and you have indoor seats AND only have to travel 15-30min in Toledo evening traffic...

or

Your team has a November weeknight game an you have outdoor seats and have to travel 60+min in Chicagoland evening traffic

I am even having a hard time justifying going to these weeknight games. Leaving work 1hr early (we are generally busy in early November) to try and enjoy a half ass tailgate in some typically crappy weather or just show up 30min before game time which kills any kind of college game feel. Either way I feel like crap the next morning for work. On top of all that we me going I leave my wife at home to deal with the 3 kids school night routine on her own.
