Bringing this back from the wintry depths where we last left it with this: http://www.bigeast.com/news/2017/10/11/b...-2019.aspx

The AAC starts sponsoring women's lax in 2019, with UConn, Cincinnati, Temple, Florida, and Vanderbilt leaving the Big East and East Carolina joining after playing as an independent in 2018. The Big East adds Old Dominion to go with Denver, Butler, Georgetown, Villanova and Marquette.

Cheaper than women's ice hockey, clearly!

It's too bad Kent State and Delaware State couldn't switch - it would keep the three midwestern non-Big East programs together, reunite the two MEAC schools, and provide a natural bridge in the Atlantic Sun to NJIT should they start a program.

I also thought it curious that the Big East kept Old Dominion as the sole public, but I guess keeping a presence in Virginia had some value in recruiting.

Bellarmine wants to start women's LAX and be in D1 for the sport. They already are an affiliate for the Southern Conference for their men's program.

How many teams are needed for a conference? ECU and ODU added to the AAC three would only be 5. Who else leaves?

Denver would stay with the Big East. ODU would have to be an Big East affiliate rather than American. Pardon me as still counted Cincy as Big East. Six are needed for an autobid, if a single sport conference splits.

Damn, you called it.

If it’s college ice hockey or lacrosse, NoDak is your man.

Am just fascinated by sports that are growing. The MAC/Horizon will break off from the ASUN and SoCon when more schools add women's lax. Akron doesn't appear yet, even though they have announced if they get community-based funding.

Sure. One thing to keep in mind though: the US has like 350 million people, or something huge, and yet we routinely get defeated in sports by countries much smaller.

What's my point? My point is, that Americans seem to have all their sports eggs in a few baskets, and everything else is left on the wayside to rot. For men: Football, obviously. Baseball, obviously, though not growing anymore. Basketball, obviously. Everything else? At best, you have a die-hard niche. At worst, no one gives a crap and you won't get any money to grow your sport or grow interest in it.

Just makes me wonder if all this hype about growth in lacrosse is short-sighted, and in fact there is about to be a very hard glass ceiling that the sport is going to run into, as the "power players" start trying to prevent it from growing further and taking away athletes.

That's the American way. When you see an up and comer, you go after their kneecaps with a crowbar. You don't encourage them, you don't foster competition.

Who is gonna invite Bellarmine up as a whole for all sports? They have been flirting on adding football, and their men's LAX is already D1.

And there it is. Another thread hijacked by David's D2 call-up fantasies.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that by 2020 there will be a plan in place for a Midwestern conference that sponsors women's lacrosse, likely under the MAC banner.

Regarding Bellarmine--if they ever do come up adding football would be a terrible move. I see them as more the Belmont type, ignoring football and focusing on basketball and boutique sports like lacrosse.

Agree, Lipscomb and Belmont ( and Trevecca Nazerene and Cumberland) have all seen explosive enrollment growth in the Nashville area and one will likely take the Lax plunge.

Buffalo should have both lax and ice hockey, but it doesn't have either. Expect it to add one, as that was the reason IMHO that it dropped baseball. The MAC schools that don't have a hockey facility nearby will probably add women's lax eventually. 2020 might be too early for a MAC women's lax, but 2025 is a very good bet.

id like to know how BE/American split came about. Did both sides sit down and say lets do this and figure out which affiliate went where or did the American schools say we are leaving and florida and Vandy are coming with us?

The AAC teams would have wanted their own league, as it wants a better chance at an autobid and more control over scheduling. They weren't about to leave the Big East unless that left them with an autobid too. As far as Florida and Vanderbilt, the AAC would be preferred because it's more like the SEC for athletics and geography.

In addition, both leagues may add have know about additional schools from their own leagues that want a spot but haven't made it public.

Ironically, both Vandy and Florida used to be a member of the single sport American Lacrosse Conference, which was mostly Big 10 schools before Maryland and Rutgers were added, which caused that league to disband.

What happened to the four non-PAC 12 MPSF teams? Fresno State, UC Davis, Saint Mary's, and San Diego State can keep the autobid for up to two seasons with fewer than six schools, but it looks like the MPSF has scrubbed their site of any references to sponsoring lacrosse.

St Mary's dropped lax, so with only three schools the MPSF sports federation dropped it as it doesn't have an autobid. Also, Denver went to the Big East last season and there were rumors that Colo St was going to add it, but that won't happen by 2018. If UNLV adds men's hockey talk was they would add women's lax as a Title IX counterbalance. San Diego St, Fresno St and UC Davis are screwed as now they need three new teams to get back an autobid.

The PAC12 probably didn't expect the MPSF to fold up shop when they withdrew their teams as the St Mary's decision seemed to come out of the blue.

With no reference to women's lacrosse to be found, you ask your fantasy question "Who is gonna invite Bellarmine up as a whole for all sports".

Bellarmine has already stated that if women's lacrosse is added they hope to move the sport to D1. There is no reason to believe that Bellarmine women's lacrosse would not join the ASUN-SoCon affiliation if it does compete in D1.

Why are you replying to my post when I am supposedly on your ignore list.
