The next realignment will be along alphabetical lines, which will make the conferences (finally) easy to remember.
It also aligns semi-geographically, at least for teams containing the name of their state.
Rules: 8 members minimum, 16 maximum.
Of course there will be a real 16 team playoff and the bowls can still offer bids to teams who don't make the playoff.
11 conference champions plus 5 at-large berths into the playoff.
Conference A: 10 teams
De-facto championship game:
Alabama-Auburn
De-facto 3rd place game:
Arizona-ASU
Conference B&D: 8 teams
The "B"s were one short so we had to add Duke to make the minimum.
Some under appreciated strength here with Boise, BYU, and Baylor. Somebody's finally getting a playoff bid!
Conference C: 11 teams
C stands for "controversial" as wikipedia includes schools like Fresno State (CSU Fresno) and UCLA here in the alphabetical listing. Clemson or Colorado could take it in any given year. uConn-CentralFla maintain their annual trophy game.
Conference EFG: 10 teams
Great geographical grouping with a bunch from Florida and Georgia, plus ECU for good measure.
Fla-FSU is the big matchup of course.
Conference HIJKL: 16 teams
Houston, Kansas State and LATech are contenders here, but this is LSU's to lose. Will drop to 15 members after Idaho goes FCS.
Conference M: 13 teams
Michigan-Michigan State is still a thing. So is ole Miss-Mississippi State. Best part though is we finally get to see Miami (OH) vs Miami (FL) for serious bragging rights!
Conference N: 12 teams
The nation was looking forward to seeing Nebraska-Notre Dame, but at the last minute The Irish preserve independence by changing their name to a symbol and becoming The Catholic University Formerly Known As Notre Dame. They do NOT change the team colors to purple, however.
Conference OP: 10 teams
A lot of heavy hitters here and I won't even pick a favorite. Good bet to send an at-large pick to the playoff most years. Will be fun to see the Ohio State band spell out the other team's name when they play Ohio. Pitt-Penn St. is now a conference game too.
Conference RS:12 teams
USC-USC could settle more than just name-claim rights many years. Rice-Stanford becomes an annual series.
Conference T: 13 teams
Texas / Texas A&M resume pleasantries, and UT(tu?)&TU argue over shades of orange. TULsa & TULane continue their grudge match. Meanwhile, TCU sneaks away with the whole thing.
Conference UVW: 13 teams
A lot of teams who can be solid and get hot any given year. Have to give Wisconsin the edge as the perennial favorite though several others will have something to say about that.

Wikipedia is the final arbiter of official alphabetization and also takes over as title sponsor of the national round-of-sixteen playoff.
