That's not how I tell the story. Truthfully, when it got icy, it was easier to go uphill than downhill and it was easier to walk than drive. On a couple particularly icy days, I saw cars sliding backward down the hill.

It probably just seemed that way because you were upright when you went uphill.

Seriously, most of us probably had it easier than our parents and harder than our kids. Isn't that part of the american Dream? To make things better for our kids than we had it?

I lived in the country during my middle school and high school days. In middle school, if I missed the bus, it was a four mile walk home. Uphill, downhill, hot, cold, it was all tough. In high school, I could find a friend with a car. Usually.

My Dad grew up during the Depression. Quite a good job by him just to graduate. He attended graduation in the morning, rode his bike home, changed out of his good clothes, than pedaled to work. Age 16.

My dad grew up in Edinburg during the Depression. His father moved his family there from Wisconsin in 1930 so he could take care of his older brother's citrus orchard on N. 10th St. for $5/week. His "you have it good" stories to us included sorghum sandwiches and outdoor plumbing with the Sears Catalog instead of Charmin.

(His father wanted my dad, his only son, to be a farmer. But my dad wasn't interested. A fabulous chemisty teacher who worked at both the high school and Edinburg Junior College led to his interest in photography, a chemistry degree at UT-Austin and a career-starting job in the Manhattan Project.)

Laredo and Zapata. And Nuevo Laredo, and in later years, several other border or Mexican towns.

Unfortunately, I have direct and personal experience with outdoor plumbing and the Sears catalog. A couple of times without any catalog. But plenty of wasps.
