I want more legal immigration, and less illegal immigration (preferably none).

So much for the argument that republicans don't hate immigration, they just hate illegal immigration.

Trump's America

What's the problem? We've got 323 million people in this country.

Shameful. This country was built on immigration. Why the change of heart?

This country was built on controlled immigration going back as far as the Naturalization Act of 1790.

We have over 300 million people in this country and we bring in 1 million LEGAL immigrants a year. Replacement figures suggest we'd be fine with 250K like we had in the 1970's. I'm all for getting us back to 250K.

Why? Please don't misconstrue what I'm asking. I'm not suggesting we cut it down to zero but why do we need MORE than we have?

In a related issue, I think it is totally ridiculous for our universities to educate foreigners and then make them go home after they get their advanced degrees.

I'd fully support giving every foreigner who attains a masters or doctorate in a STEM program, a green card.

I'm also in favor of the H1B visas, if some controls are put on to discourage abuse.

As an aside in Japan, almost all work visas are for prostitutes/hostesses. As many as 150,000 Chinese, Korean and Thai prostitutes have work visas in Japan. Yet it is exceedingly difficult to get a work visa for a technology job.

I agree.

Why?

Nothing wrong with legal immigration. This nation was build on it. I'm not xenophobic to the point where I believe closed borders to all are the answer.

Try again. I edited that post. I'm not suggesting we cut it down to zero but why do we need MORE than we have? Our infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the population we've got now.

Nor am I, but we are taking in way too many LEGAL immigrants too. 250K is a reasonable replacement rate of immigrants.

This is such a foolish statement.

Every country in the South American and North American Hemispheres was built on immigration. What are their immigration policies?

Who cares about their immigration policies. This is about the United States. Have we really lowered the bar that much that we now simply want to be like all the other countries in this hemisphere?

RE: GOP Senators Move to Limit Legal Immigration
Frankly speaking immigration doesn't make as much sense now. We don't have a booming industry. Our infrastructure is strained. Our healthcare system is a train wreck. I don't see the problem with slowing it to a trickle at this point and only allowing the best applicants, a mix of those with good tech and trade skills / knowledge and proficient at English.

No problem. Don't ever bring up another country's healthcare, education or gun control laws.

Unfortuantely, too many big companies have their hands in the H1-B program, which needs a SERIOUS revamping..

Did you know there were consulting/HR companies that ONLY give out H1-B visas and do so with minimal tracking?

Yes. H1B was ment to bring in the brightest to cure cancer (not necessarily this but for high tech innovation). It was not meant to staff IT help desks at lower rates than Americans.
