From what I've read it's an arcane rule and rarely enforced. In most cases I would agree with you but...her...not so much.

You can but there are rules put in place for you to do just that. On the open floor is not that place. I like the rule because it helps to keep things from getting too personal. I think this board has a rule on personal attacks. So why shouldn't the Senate

The way this came about is that the Senators were originally the equivalent of Ambassadors of the States to the United States. The House represented the people....the Senate represented the States. It was unseemly for a State to call out the "Ambassador" of another State. The Senate was supposed to be a lot more statesmanlike, dignified, and congenial as befit representatives of entities that still retained some level of sovereignty.

They were appointed by State legislatures and those legislatures did not want themselves...or their State embarrassed.

Unfortunately we started popular voting for Senators and they became snake oil salesmen with good hair instead of elder statesmen Ambassadors and there is no reason left for dignity or honor.

You respect the office no matter how you feel about the person. And when you disrespect the rules...you are disrespecting the office. Same should go for the President no matter who's holding the office.

Sad day in America politics. We confirm a PTO President as Secretary of Education, we censure a Senator from reading a letter written by Coretta Scott Key specifically about Senator Sessions, and the FLOTUS files a $150 million libel suit against the media (and also settles a smaller lawsuit against a Maryland blogger) for the lack of her future earnings capabilities.
