Candle and his salary
Should be ahead of WMU and Ohio who I believe these coaches make more money then Candle. Candle should be in the 800,000 range. He is a hell of recruiter.

Candle gets paid plenty. Just because Western is stupid doesn't mean UT has to be.

How much is WMU paying Lester ? I see where Fleck will make $3.5 million where Campbell will make $2.0 million. I can't believe Fleck is that much better a coach than Campbell?

The coaching salaries are *%&$#@ ridiculous. In my lifetime the salaries have spiraled geometrically out of control!!!!!!!

College football is now a sham to me... especially at the G5 level. So much money concentrated in so few schools and pockets!

I absolutely love college football but it has been completely ruined for me by ESPN, TV in general, and advertising $. Yes- I still love UT football but that's about it for me. It's possibly headed for extinction. Last one out turn off the lights or file for bankruptcy or both

I am sure Fleck views Minnesota as only another temporary stop on his way up the ladder. I was a bit surprised that he didn't hold out a year or two long for a better job but then $3.5 million isn't too bad and he probably felt that he needed to climb one more rung up the ladder before taking that last step to reach the top. Campbell claimed to have fallen in love with Ames, Iowa when the Rockets played there before, so who knows, maybe he really did like the place and was willing to work there for less money. I suspect that he and his family can survive nicely in Ames, Iowa on $2 million a year. We will know sure how much he likes Ames in about 8-10 years IF he is wildly successful there and the REAL big boys come knocking.

Say what? He beat Campbell in 2015 head to head, and went to a NY6 Bowl as a G5 coach in 2016. That's better.

RE: Candle and his salary
We smoked WMU in Toledo Fleck's first year. We went to WMU and beat them by (1) point in the pouring rain with Woodside as our QB. We lost by (5) the next year (2015) in Toledo on a stupid targeting penalty just as Kareem was headed down the field to potentially take the lead. We got beat fair and square this year at WMU, but, if we didn't throw a "pick six" the very first play and fumble on the two yard line going in for a score after watching Kareem tear up their "D", then it's a six point game. How does that make Fleck a better coach ?

Head to head competition isn't the only important metric:

MACC: Fleck 1, Campbell 0
Access Bowl Fleck 1, Campbell 0

There are incentives in the contract for winning the division, winning the MAC, making a bowl game, winning a bowl game, academic performance and more. All of this can add up on top of the base salary and marketing dollars.

Challenge for us will be to either pay the HC well (for the MAC) and not have significant $$ for assistants or average for HC and more for the assistants. IMO pay the HC because no matter what we have left for the assistants, it will never be enough to keep the good ones from moving on. Coach Candle recently made the comment on this topic that there are 5 coaches at a BIG school who make more than his salary. It is what it is.

RE: Candle and his salary
There are probably ten (or is it 12) coaches at a BIG school whose programs bring in more revenue, so there it is. I'd like to think UT is more about perspective. Economically struggling schools, you're here to make a sacrifice for the better good: academics, research and dorm food.

Only 5?
