Usually I would think that having both the NBA and NHL in the same arena is the most financially sound way to go. But seems for Brooklyn, they'd actually make more money from concerts than the NHL.

And the arena was built specifically for bball, making hockey sight lines poor.

Obvious suggestions are Quebec City or Hartford, but that won't happen because moving out of the New York market would reduce both the franchise value and the NHL's TV value.

Barclay's is not meant for hockey. Meanwhile their old home, Nassau Coliseum, is getting $130M renovations: http://nypost.com/2017/01/10/nassau-coli...enovation/

I imagine they'll head home. They never should have left Long Island.

That article says Nassau Coliseum will seat only 13,000 for hockey. So that's not a practical, long-term solution for an NHL franchise.

Apparently it's been downsized and changed since they left.

They had a chance to be part of the original construction but balked. You reap what you sow.

You're right. They're only drawing about 12,700 per game in Barclays but I imagine they'd outgrow the new Nassau very quickly.

Word on the street is they want new arena in Queens. Nickname be damned, I wonder if they could play at the Izod Center in New Jersey? It's more or less vacant, that may be the best solution. Or maybe they could play at the Garden, though I'm sure they are an even tougher venue to please as a tenant.

I don't think the Islanders help the NHL's national TV contracts much, but if the Islanders leave the area their contract with MSG Plus would end.

I agree. My friend used to work for them. Although Nassau and Suffolk Counties don't usually get treated as their own market, Nassau-Suffolk (that's what the radio market is called) has more people than some markets with teams in major sports. As of Fall 2015, the Nassau-Suffolk radio market had 2,477,900 people age 12+, which ranked 20th. Baltimore, St. Louis, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, New Orleans, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and Nashville are 12 markets with fewer people than Nassau-Suffolk that have teams in at least two of MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA.

I'd rather the Islanders play in Queens than in Barclays Center, but I don't like your other two ideas. Moving to New Jersey would mean that the "New York" part and the "Islanders" part don't fit (the Giants and Jets call themselves "New York" but that's in a sport with no New York City teams). Neither Madison Square Garden nor Izod Center gets the Islanders closer to Nassau and Suffolk. I'm an Islanders fan who hates the Rangers, and I would hate for the Islanders to move in with the Rangers. It would also make it harder to schedule games if the Rangers, Islanders, and Knicks were there.

Devils probably wouldn't want them in NJ.

But as a short term solution, given their options, I'd say it could work.

A new hockey arena next to Citi seems like a great idea. Queens is still technically Long Island.

Nassau Coliseum in the interim.
