Should NMSU join the Southland?
If NMSU has massive struggles trying to go the independent route (which I believe they will), should they go down to FCS instead of dropping football and join the Southland? It currently has 11 football-playing schools and could go to regional divisions if NMSU joins. Also, Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston St. are both good at basketball and provide NMSU with a better basketball schedule with albeit a weaker chance of getting the auto-bid.

RE: Should NMSU join the Southland?
NMSU will limp along with 5 home games for a while. Remember, they're not like Idaho. You can count guaranteed games with UTEP and New Mexico every year. There are other independents that would want home and home games late in the season (army, Umass, BYU). They'll play 3 buy-games against P5 teams, and go buy an FCS team. So all that together is 9 games. Just need to go get 3 more and you have a schedule.

I think NMSU is playing it smart. Wait until the early 2020s for expansion to blow up again. The MWC will get hit, and they'll slide right in.

Joining the Southland would be like NMSU waiving the white flag on everything in athletics and academics. UTA, Texas St, and UTSA couldn't wait to get out.

The Southland doesn't look kindly even on schools in West Texas, never mind NM. It won't happen. Abilene Christian was a stretch for them.

What canetown said.

NMSU has guaranteed games with UTEP and UNM plus BYU might be interested in signing a 6 game series (4 in Provo and 2 in Las Cruces for example) and I'm sure they can sign one and ones with multiple G5 schools with 3 money games vs P5 schools. A NMSU schedule could look like this most years:

@P5 superpower
@UTEP
New Mexico
@P5 superpower
Regional FCS
@P5 middle of the pack
@G5
G5
@BYU
G5 or lower level P5
Regional FCS
@G5

That schedule is 1 FBS home game short of FBS standards. You need 4 + 1 FCS. A 2nd FCS game doesn't count.

Also, indy scheduling after September is a challenge. Conferences will clear spots for Notre Dame, Army, Navy (not anymore), but others are an uphill battle. NMSU might have better luck pushing UNM and UTEP to move those games--it's an established rivalry, they're doing a solid etc.

NMSU should remain FBS no matter what. Even if they never win again.

That's what I'd say about my school so I wish them the same.

Winning and losing won't make much difference. The question is can they (and UMass, for that matter) get 4 FBS home games a year long-term.

And they have a good basketball program. They really need FBS to eventually get a decent home for their basketball. They aren't getting in the West Coast or return to the Missouri Valley. So they have to hope for the MWC.

That's it, they have to survive long enough to get into the MWC at some point very soon. I think they can make it as independent for 2 years, but I'm still watching to see if they can pull off the 5 mandatory home games for 2018:
-Wyoming.--scheduled
-FCS.--I'm assuming
-New Mexico--I'm assuming
Cheers!

There will be no more G5 expansion. The Sunbelt won't expand past 10.

RE: Should NMSU join the Southland?
I think NMSU is more likely to drop football than join the Southland. Not only is the conference a bad match academically and perception wise, but NMSU recruits heavily in Texas now, and basically only has the FBS label as advantage over schools like Sam Houston and SFAustin. As an FCS member that advantage would disappear. We get a few hidden gem players each year now ,but as an FCS team in a Texas centric league even that would end.

The Big Sky is a tough match geographically because of the distances and smaller cities, but I think because the Western location would put NMSU on more or less the same recruiting situation within the conference, and it is a better match academically and school mission wise, it is a more likely destination than the Southland.

Not to say NMSU wouldn't drop football instead of any FCS, but if we go FCS, I think it is Big Sky.

Don't join the Big Sky. I don't even want Idaho to join the Big Sky, and at least in our case it makes geographic sense. People complain about the cost of FBS football, but the finances of scholarship FCS are terrible.

Idaho is going to take about a 50% hit to the non-subsidized part of our athletic budget as donor money dries up and revenue from guarantee games and CFP gets slashed. The taxpayers will end up paying for about 75% of our athletic department (it's about 48% now). This is a very typical subsidy-to-revenue ratio for FCS schools that aren't located in Montana.

I haven't looked into NMSU and you guys have better basketball than we do, so maybe the numbers aren't quite as bad in your case but I'm sure a drop would still be a financial hit plus you guys would have far worse travel in any FCS conference than we do in the Big Sky. Idaho and New Mexico are not rich states. In our case I have to believe our Republican-dominated state government will eventually ask why it's pumping so much money into something that isn't delivering much of a return. I don't know what will happen at that point but it won't be good.

And all of this isn't even taking into account the biggest reason not to join the Big Sky -- It's FCS. Who the hell cares?

You guys are doing the right thing in an awful situation. Joining the Big Sky or any other FCS conference is a great way to lose a lot of money and also take a big in-state PR hit. Good luck out there.

NMSU will not drop football. They are in the same boat as UMass as far as prioritizing basketball in a football world.. On a side note, I believe if UMass took the MAC offer they'd be at the top of the conference; they have a ton of young talent in a top 7 league.

RE: Should NMSU join the Southland?
NMSU offers the MWC a semi warm body at best and the MWC already has 12 football playing members so unless thw MWC loses 4 members or more NMSU would only take from them while offering them nothing...
Chances of NMSU joining a FBS conference in 5 tp 10 years are just about none...
Time for them to stand up and face the facts and realize the NM gov is going to keep cutting their budget and now is a good time to drop football amd concentrate on sports that are sustaniable and of some value...

Best case scenario would be MWC taking both NM St and UTEP.

But I doubt the MWC has any interest in that.

There will be no more expansion of any G5 schools. Not even the Sunbelt with 10 teams.

If there is a change in the distribution of the G5 CFP $$ it could be a possibility, but since the G5 conferences decided to lower the base amount from 12 to 10 million states, they are going to do any changes to incentivize larger conferences.

On that simple basis, I agree.

A G5 still might find another basis on which expansion makes more overall sense than staying. But generally I think the FBS confs are pretty much locked in ... so long as nothing major happens to the Big 12.

Then again, people have probably been saying that for a while.

It's a shame the Sun Belt doesn't want them. They are not THAT far out of the western footprint, and their Basketball and Baseball would be assets to that league.
