Cumberland turn a defensive corner?
Just noticed he has 20 steals on the season, 10 in the last 3 games. His anticipation his jumped up the charts, now leads team in steals / min.

Something to look forward to, if its a little bit of a fluke 3 games, or a sign of things to come.

He does tend to get beat off the dribble (or so it seems), but he provides great help defense and is sneaky quick at times.

Kyle Washington has steadily progressed on defense as well

Cumberland is defending really well off the ball, on the ball still has a long way to go.

This. He has a great feel for the game and is able to step into passing lanes and strip the ball from guys who are not paying attention. Little bit harder for him to stay in front of guys who are driving.

That was definitely the case today.

Watch him play the passing lanes. For a freshman he has great concentration and anticipation.

RE: Cumberland turn a defensive corner?
Have noticed that Cumberland doesn't keep has hands up on defense and doesn't move very fast east to west. I'm sure that is something he could improve on by the time he is a junior. Very good anticipating passes, those kind of steals are most successful turnovers in terms of creating offense.

RE: Cumberland turn a defensive corner?
I love Cumberland taking the ball solo down court on a fast break. He is an amazing finisher and always seems to get the 'and one' on those. Plus, he can bomb from DEEP. Like, Burton/Durden range. Good bball IQ and has a GREAT guard body...big and strong. BRIGHT future for him at UC.

Edit: The key will be, how does he play once his name is out there and teams begin to pregame plan for him. That's where you see how good he is or not.

Precisely.

Note how Troy & Kevin shade off their guy when Cumberland has on-the-ball D. They position themselves to help him.
