Trump changes mind on Israel
Good news

President Trump is encouraging Israel to hold off on new settlement construction. The surprising statement came after the Israeli prime minister vowed to build the first new settlement in the West Bank in many years.

Israel Starts Evacuating Illegal Outpost; Approves 3,000 New West Bank Units
The White House says while it doesn't see settlements as an obstacle to peace between Israelis and Palestinians, the construction of new settlements and the expansion of those beyond their current borders may not be helpful.

I don't see any change at all on our side. The change was in Israel.

Didn't Trump originally say that Israels should do the settlements? Now he is saying maybe not such a good idea.

Thankfully, someone is starting to bend his ear.

I think this is just another of dozens of examples of the left trying to claim he said something by twisting what he said...

What Trump did was he pressured Obama to veto a UN resolution condemning the settlements... and then he selected someone who has arguably 'pro-settlement' as their ambassador... which one COULD (at face value without actually reading more which is what is so often done) interpret to mean that he was in favor of them....

Instead what he said was “As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations,” the president-elect said. “This puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis.”

I'd note that Obama said essentially the same thing in 2011 when he vetoed a similar measure

I think the appointment of a pro-settlement ambassador is the old flies with honey adage. It's difficult for a Republican to convince a Democrat of something... Far easier for a democrat to do so... If someone who is 'pro-settlement' sees value in giving them up in exchange for something else... that's power.

I realize that to many Democrats, especially some on here prefer to thumb their noses at people when we appoint ambassadors... but that's unlikely to win friends or influence anyone.

The Israelis don't give a schit about the the POTUS ever really says. They are going to do what is in their best interests regardless.

Funny thing that many on the left worry about Israeli settlements just outside current borders yet have zero problem at home with illegal undocumented folks settling in communities across the United states and protecting them from deportation.

The big test is whether we move our embassy to Jerusalem.

And if they start building new settlements, we should make it clear its not going to happen.
