I agree. Since there was no dress code against it?...She should have kept her yap shut.

Usually, political shirts are prohibited in public schools. And before you start throwing free speech rants, it's been upheld by the constitution.

It that's the case in that school then the kid should not have worn the shirt. Still does't give a pass to the idiotic teacher though.

I agree with you there. The teacher should not have confronted the student at all. They should have just walked them to the front office and let administration make that determination.

she is a teacher... that explains her stupidity. 07-coffee3

Surely you see the difference?

No, the responsible thing to do is to ignore the shirt and proceed with teaching Algebra.

Children indeed have limited rights of free speech as minors.
"Materially and Substantially interferes with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school"

Many administrators have attempted to hide non-material and non-substantial in that mix. Like banning the US flag as being "potentially disruptive".

I haven't seen the video yet (it's on facebook (which I avoid like the plague!) according to the radio hosts) and Mom claimed that the kid chose to wear the hat himself, and she didn't make him, and that the boy is indeed into political discussions at that age.

But, I had to ask myself WHY THE HELL ARE 11-14 year olds fighting over politics??? Shouldn't they be fighting over whether or not boy/girl XYZ likes their friend or not?

I guess you never multi-tasked at that age, because I did both. Minus the physical fighting.

I know at that age I didn't give a rat's a@s about politics. I'd bet it's driven by hyper political parents.

To each his own, but back in that day I multi-taksed between school, sports, and girls. I couldn't vote so didn't really give a crap about politics.

Exactly.. our votes were limited to "class clown", "most likely to succeed", etc. Not who was running things from the white house.

5th, 6th and 7th grade we talked about politics and our governors and senators. I remember class votes. Birch Bayh Sr. was Senator in Indiana. Again, just because you were apolitical doesn't mean every kid was the same as you at your age. Maybe you were the odd one!04-cheers

03-banghead It's like I'm talking Greek here or something.

When I was in school, I multi-tasked between school, sports, girls, and arguing about politics. Note the bolded word, oh condescending one(s)!!

In 4th grade I stuck a Republican sticker on the front of my desk. They forced me to remove it because it was a sticker...and not my desk. Not because it was Republican.

Conn, we know what you are saying, but at that age, I'll be honest, some of us had had _zero_ interest in politics. (Once you hit high school, it changed of course.. or maybe 9th grade once civics started getting taught?)

“It does happen,” said Michelle Fischer. “I think (politics) should be taught in our schools, but only in a two-sided positive way.”

Fischer posted her outrage over the teacher’s handling of the issue on Facebook and the story went viral.

First of all, those kinds of shirts are prohibited in most schools.

Which is freaking ridiculous. Would a Ted Nugent shirt be banned? How about Katy Perry?

And FWIW, maybe it was a function of growing up about 10 miles from The Swamp DeeCee, but we talked a LOT of politics. First real slobber-knnocker I recall was in 5th grade, and yes we knew what we were talking about, relatively speaking.

Exactly.... not at age 12 anyway. Maybe some by 16. I would say it is very uncommon for pre teen to be political. I can though see them getting caught up in the stuff their parents are preaching without having a clue as to WTF they are talking about. I expect this is the case here.

That is insane. BTW would the meaning have been the same when Obama and Hillary voted yes to build the ball in 2006?

All 3 need a swift kick in the ass IMO...the teacher and the parents. If you let your 12 old walk around in public wearing that unaccompanied? You are being irresponsible today in the current environment with his safety. That is undeniable. I guess if he got his ass kicked or worse by some pissed off illegals you could live with yourself? I bet not.

RE: Teacher Berates 7th-Grader For Wearing Pro-Trump Shirt, Compares It To A Swastika
Back in October a teacher at a high school in Albuquerque asked his class who they supported for president. A girl said she supported Trump. Teacher made the student wait out in the hall for the rest of the period. Five days later that teacher participated in a protest in Downtown Albuquerque. The protest was about a hung jury in the Trial of 2 APD officers. Protestors blocked traffic. A vehicle was caught with protestors around. It was one of several vehicles that protestors had hit with theirs signs. All of it was caught on video by one of the local news stations. The teacher was clearly seen braking his sign on the truck. The teacher was arrested by Friday and placed on administrative leave.
