Board meeting today and tomorrow
Usually these things get a lot more attention around here

Here's the agenda: http://uasystem.edu/wp-content/uploads/2...020317.pdf

Items of note:

Authorizations for expansion to the dining hall, new police HQ building, revising (to be bigger, if the Tuscaloosa News is correct) the plans for the new Arts & Sciences building

Ray Watts donating $25k to a nursing scholarship in his wife's name

and that's about it

Good progress. The next phase of approval for the 10th Ave S streetscape is up for a vote today also. Also looks like UAB is buying the Courtyard Marriot on 19th St S by the hospital. After buying the Doubletree, UAB would be the owner of two hotels.

The Doubletree they will actually own and operate the hotel. The Marriott, just by the item on the agenda, looks like they're just buying the property. Assume they'll just continue to lease it?

The picture of the new College of Arts & Sciences building that Ed Enoch just tweet looks awesome. Didn't know it would be that big. It'll sit on the currently vacant corner of the campus green closest to Snoozys and the Blount residence hall.

Looks like the hospital is buying it for $30M, investing $1.2M in upgrades, and will hire a 3rd party group to operate the hotel.

Good news/bad news

They are adjusting the retirement age in response to the constitutional amendment from last year. They are raising the mandatory retirement age for board members from 70 to 75, but they are leaving in place the 3 consecutive term limit, so, all in all not that extreme, and by far not nearly as bad as it could've been. That means Paul Bryant, Jr. probably isn't coming back, but it means Joe Espy won't be retiring this year, he would've otherwise been forced to.

PBJ not coming back is a big win, but would've also caused a lot of chaos for them.

Espy is on his 3rd term right? Will it run out before he's 75 or do we have him for another 5 years? St. John has been on there forever too. Hopefully he reaches a term limit soon.

Tuscaloosa News says Espy was appointed in 2000. So we'd still only have him until the end of 2018 I think.

Saw something that made me chuckle on the news.

New Chancellor Ray Hayes was wearing a green tie.

St. John was appointed in 2002. In 3 years, both of them will be gone. 02-13-banana

That is true UNLESS something happens to change those rules too.

If they were going to change those rules, they'd change them. Fess also probably wouldn't have given a statement saying how he thinks the new rules are really good.
