The first game was mostly spent thinking how our team quickness was so below average for a mid-major. The team seemd hard working, motivated, and fairly good fundamentaly. There were several above average shooters and of course one very above average rebounder. All team players. But their lack of quickness often left them watching the other team shoot layups.
This most recent game was mostly spent wondering why a slow team did not at least experiment more with zones.
Can someone who has been watching all the games comment on this year's team use of zones? Has it been tried and failed or is it just against this coach's philosophy?
I would say against the coach's philosophy. In his years at UT, K has very rarely used a zone.
Agreed, very little zone. When coach TK plays zone it is usually 1-3-1, which can cause some issues for opponents, but UT gets killed on the boards in the 1-3-1.

Nothing wrong w being a strictly man team as long as guys can guard. This team has some poor on ball defenders and help awareness. Navigato has the lateral quickness of a parked Oldsmobile. Knapke helps OK but can be worked in the post by a decent opponent. Taylor rebounds great on defense but is only average otherwise. Roberts has good defensive fundamentals but is too short. Jonjon has actually grown into a good defender, Lauf is good and Sanford has always been decent but that's it. The TK 1-3-1 has never done much other than create a few turnovers at the top. This team is pretty good in a smooth faster paced game but can't win when it gets ugly or has to match the intensity of a good defensive team. Next year we will be a lot more athletic , maybe coach k will evolve and try to pressure the ball or trap.
