NIU attendance. Underwhelming. And now the product on the floor is starting to match, save that one good outing in Toledo

RE: Jan 30th MBB Attendance
Akron had 4,884 people for the Buffalo game this past Saturday. That will be the only Saturday game we host this entire MAC season. All 3 of our other scheduled Saturday games got flexed to Friday, which IMO has hurt our attendance some.

How akron does not sell out every game is beyond me? Pretty large metro area not a huge arena, consistent solid national program. Just shows lack of MAC support the surrounding communities provide, really is sad, while an average now will pay 50 bucks on a weeknight, drive an hour in a snow storm to see UMICH play

The fact Kent is 15 minutes down the road and is typically near the top of the MAC themselves in both performance and attendance certainly doesn't help. Add the 2 together and that would give you 6500-7000 fans that attend MAC games in the Akron metro. The 3 directional Michigan schools combined don't give you that. NEO has a lot of people, but it also has 4 D1 basketball teams + the Cavs. That doesn't count the OSU, UNC, and Duke bandwagon fans neither.

CMU has the leading scorer in the nation that is getting highlights all over ESPN. How aren't they drawing better?

This has never been brought up before, but I'll bite.

1. Akron, while is doing better to get more students on campus, is by far the biggest commuter school in the league. You can use that as a knock on the university, but it's part of its mission and is what it is.

2. There is only so much time people will commit to basketball, and Akron has two professional teams within a half hour ... one that just so happens to be the defending champions of the best league in the world, with the best current player in the world on that team being from the city of Akron. The other pro team is the Canton Charge, which does have a decent following (they usually draw 3,000-4,000 over 25 or so home games).

3. There area 3 other D1 college teams within 45 miles.

4. Once this season ends, Akron will have played exactly two home Saturday games in MAC play over the past two seasons. One, last year, was against Miami, the worst team in the league (3,700). The other was last Saturday's game against Buffalo, which nearly drew 5,000 despite being moved to Saturday night.

5. Nobody has even come close to losing as many home games due to TV as Akron has over the past 10 years. When SportsTime Ohio was doing MAC games, about 40 percent of their broadcasts were Akron games (since it was based out of Cleveland and an easy trip to make). Even now, the reason they are losing all these Saturday games is due to CBSSports and its Friday night games.

6. And this affects everybody in the league, but the move to Tuesday night early-week games has had a negative effect on attendance by going up against high school boys basketball games.

Whatever, instead of wondering about Akron, why not wonder about Kent ... you know the self-proclaimed basketball school? It has all the same issues Akron has, outside of not losing as many games to Friday nights, not losing as many overall games to TV and it having three times more students living on/near campus.

It's a knock on the surrounding alumni, community, and students not the school. I agree cmu attendance sucks. I don't get it.

RE: Jan 30th MBB Attendance
Student interest is pretty high compared to most seasons at Toledo. I think our players are pretty popular around campus so they have more friends and acquaintances interested in seeing them play. I bet we beat our last season average by finishing our 3 of 4 at home to end the year. The crowd we had Saturday looked larger than the 4,800 they reported. NIU brought a decent sized crowd themselves so 04-bow CMU's women traveled well for the night cap. It's good to see some teams bringing fans to Savage.

I was watching some of that game before Akron came on, definitely in the range I would've guessed (4,500-5,000).

4,500+ is terrific for a Tuesday night and Ball St total is pretty good as well. Last nights average was 2,210. If you subtract Buffalo, that would drop it down to 1,726.

Here is a good photo of what the student section looked like at UB last night:

I don't think Marcus Keene liked it

That looks awesome. Great work Buffalo.

NIU student "section" (more like 8-10 seats) is non existent. Looked up the red riot website and it hasn't been updated since volleyball hosted the MAC tourney.

Instead of creating a new thread, I'll just post the up to date averages here;

6,419 Ohio
4,535 Toledo
3,522 Akron
3,394 Buffalo
3,150 Kent State
3,127 CMU

2,890 MAC Average

2,719 Ball State
2,046 WMU
1,855 Bowling Green
1,736 Miami
1,548 NIU
1,397 EMU

MAC raised its average by +15 this week, namely from Ohio boosting its season average from 5,498 last week to 6,419 this week (+921). Bowling Green, Ball State and NIU have each already hosted 6 home games to date. Toledo, Buffalo, and WMU have each hosted 4. Everyone else is at 5 a piece.

The Buffalo pic is OK...but no one is topping the Ohio crowds:

I find it hard to believe we even averaged over 2000 last year.
