Underclassmen
I was just thinking: A team that had a starting 5 of Jenifer, Cumberland, Evans, Scott, and Brooks would probably be a tournament team this year. All 5 of those are freshman or sophomores.

While our upperclassmen are clearly the leaders, I don't think there's any step down when we go to our younger players. And obviously Evans is a stud scorer. Our freshmen and sophomores are really good this year.

Evans and Cumberland look like future pros. Jennifer looks like a guy that could lead the league in assists one year. Brooks and Scott have tons of potential and could be a very scary front court in two years.

Cumberland has been really good of late. Scott and Brooks have been good in spurts. Jennifer was really good today, but there is a reason they do not get a ton of minutes vs upper level competition. Cumberland will continue to get big minutes with what he showed against X. Would like to see how the minutes go down the stretch, especially on the road.

The future is in good hands. The near future that is. Cumberland and Brooks are the real deal as FROSH.

Did I see some on this board criticizing Cronin's recruiting? And based purely on the number of stars by their name?

From Cincinnati.com:
Quote:UC’s Brooks suffered a right knee injury with 4:36 left in the game, and he was helped off the court. Brooks later returned to the bench, with an ice pack on his knee.

“He was in the handshake line walking through,” Cronin said. “That’s a start. The fact that he got up and walked to the handshake line is the best sign I can give you.”

Mick echoed this comment. i don't know what Troy and KJ shot today but it was poor. Mick noted that last year they lose when they shoot that poorly. This year, they've been winning.

Next man up really applies to this team. The confidence is building that each game we don't have to depend on the same player to score 20 in order to win. Nowhere was it more evident than the boxscore for the X game showing 5 in double figures.

Troy didn't have a very good game against USF, but I've noticed sometimes against the lesser teams he doesn't seem to be quite as laser focused. I always count on Troy when UC needs him. It was fun watching Jenifer get some good run yesterday. I think his size can make for a matchup issue against certain teams and when Troy is playing his best its hard to find him minutes, but I am confident in Jenifer when he gets on the floor.

I doubt Scott and Brooks, while having potential, have the offensive skills now
required to compete for a whole game. Who would you have spell Scott and Brooks??
Rotations and spot subs this year don't get in the 64..

That thread was a whole lot more than who he recruits and why. I'm fine with his recruits as a whole, we've got a great 3 year window.

And true stars don't mean everything but...go back and watch this from Dontonio Wingfields first game : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCGkioOkPCk

recruiting for a buzz generates excitement for your program, my problem with the interview is in the same interview he says he's not recruiting for message boards and complains about the attendance.

In the very near future we all hope he can take the next step to pulling and competing for top 50 guys regularly; the new arena will help, and at least an elite 8 will help.

It's fine to be less exciting... but then you really have to win more. It was great to win a half against X not because we held them to 20 point... but because we scored 50. You don't always need to score a lot, but it's hard to come back as a team without every abrupting for some points.

A little of Cane shown here. Have to wait to see how he blends in with all our talent on a bigger stage. I see lots of similarities to Nick.

The bigger questions is can he play defense. If he gives up as many points as he scores then he won't get much PT.

It's the good thing about sitting out a year and becoming accustomed to the culture. He will know what he needs to do next year to stay on the floor.

RE: Underclassmen
Not sure if Broome played much defense before he came here but he has now had more than half a year under the coaching of Mick, so I would presume that when the next season starts he will at least have a modicum of defense instilled. He will know that if doesn't play D, there will be plenty of substitutes ready on the sideline.
