What will it take for The University of Memphis to Have a Medical School?
I've always been wondered why we (i.e., The University of Memphis) doesn't have a medical school?
The UofM is located in a city where biomedical research and development is a major industry; has a plethora of major medical providers ... St. Jude, Baptist, Methodist, and St. Francis; but only one medical school. By contrast, Nashville has three ... Vanderbilt, Fisk, and Meharry ...

UTM Medical school is here.
We should concentrate on other types of more cutting edge academics. The world is in need of lots of educated people in fields ew barely understand yet. The University of Memphis should be trying its best to figure out the next big thing and jump on that. Why fight with UTM? The University of Memphis supplies a good percentage of undergrads into the UTM programs already.

Has to get past Tennessee Higher Education Commission more than likely. Previously, it would have been Tennessee Board of Regents - who i am 90% sure hated us.
The state only funds two medical schools that I know of. ETSU and UTHSC. ETSU is the "rural" focus and UTHSC handles "urban." Vandy, Fisk and Meharry are all private. It is unlikely we would get our own medical school in Memphis. The best path I can see towards that would be to merge UTHSC and Memphis (more likely with our own board), and then the UT system gets one in Knoxville or Nashville to offset the "loss." That is still astronomically unlikely.
However, if anyone was able to convince the legislature it was worthwhile, it would be Rudd. A combination of UTHSC and Univ of Memphis would essentially create the State's second, public, Carnegie I university.

Tennessee doesn't fund the two they have. UT Memphis is very small and doesn't have it's own hospital (not really), and ETSU's is miniscule. Trust me I know.
Not going to happen, and if it did it would struggle like those two, or worse.

Tony,
Fisk does not have a medical school. Meharry would never survive without Vanderbilt. Nashville General Hospital, Nashville's version of The Med, is barely functioning. It is third world care.
The one thing you need for a med school is patients. There are not enough in the Memphis area to support two legit med schools. The Memphis VA which provides some of those patients is maybe one of the worse VA's in the nation. It has horrible conditions. UofM can focus on biomedical opportunities and other medical related subjects not covered by the UT medical school.
What could really be cool is for UofM to offer some PhD programs and research in areas complementing St. Jude and UT med school and draw faculty and staff from other Memphis institutions to UofM for collaboration and joint research.

It is off the scale expensive. The University should be happy to leave that alone. City of Memphis benefits greatly from UTHSC.

We also have West Clinic, Hamilton Eye, and Shea Ear here, all world class. U of M should collaborate with them in any way possible.
It's hard to believe with all the patients we draw from the tri-state area that there is not room for another hospital here, esp. since Baptist left Midtown.
The answer is probably in the death-grip the rest of Tennessee has on Memphis, politically.

I guess you didn't really read the post ... "it was about what will it take." The medical school that you're referring too is called The UT Health Science Center. It changed its name from UT-Memphis several years ago.
You sound a little defensive. Are you a UTHSC aspirant? Personally, I don't think that it would hurt the Memphis metropolitan area to have another medical. Additionally, I don't think that it would hurt The UofM image wise. Universities with medical tend to receive a little more approbation (i.e., Tulane, SMU, Rice) than 4 year institutions that do not ... .

Sorry, I'm just a lowly graduate student ... LOL. I just get tired of seeing us (i.e., The UofM) roasted every time sports columnists start talking about candidates for addition into one of the top five division 1 football conferences ... .

If you want another medical school in Memphis, you need to hope a private school is founded (or Rhodes or CBU added) and partners with St. Jude or something. Cuz it makes no sense for the U of M to have one when there is already a state school here.

Our best hope is to do what the State of Georgia did with Augusta University. [1]
"On January 8, 2012, the Georgia Board of Regents unanimously approved the consolidation of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University.[13] Ricardo Azziz was appointed president of the new institution."
The big difference is that Georgia only has one board and one University doesn't carry all the weight.

We would have to make The University of Memphis so attractive that the medical school wanted to be absorbed.

A former coach asked more than once on his radio show why the med school was UT-Memphis and not UM-Memphis. It always got the crowd stirred up.
