RE: P Mason Strickland commits to Mississippi Southern basbol...
I've seen him pitch for about the last 6 years at different times. Kinda torn on this one. He's a really good kid and competes his butt off. He throws all his pitches for strikes and doesn't beat himself. With that said, when I saw him last year he pitched at about 84-86 MPH. Topped out at MAYBE 88. Doesn't really have the type of frame you would project to add much velocity either. Will be interesting to see how his stuff translates to Division 1. I hope really well.

And before someone jumps in with the "it's not about how hard you throw" line, save it. Yes there are the Cord Cockrells of the world that can be effective throwing 85. But those guys are the exception. Research has shown that the harder you throw, on average, the lower your ERA will be. I hope the kid can make it work.

Seth Maness used to dominate us topping out in the upper 80s

Luis Pollorena from MSst was 5'6 165 and didn't have the velo either. I remember that guy carving us up one year and he did the same throughout the year to other teams. Greg Maddux at one point was averaging 84 on his fb in the majors.

Eagle9 I know you know this but with baseball it is all about filling the zone and keeping hitters off balance. From what I have heard about this kid, he does just that. Great command and mixes his pitches. A player that can do that can be successful.

The Kid that pitched the Championship game in the world series for JCJC (Ben Stiglets) throws harder with a great slider and sinker. Is getting absolutely zero interest from USM but a good bit from other D-1 schools USA being one. go figure.

Bartolo Colon is probably the best example of a guy who neither has a rocket arm nor a bunch of fancy pitches but still makes it work.

A big part of being a starter is pitch count. Sure, a guy like Mike the Goatherder (a.k.a. Miguel Cabrera) can throw 103mph, but there's no way he's doing it more than an inning.

Todd Mcinnis topped out at 92-93 MPH at times with a big league slider. Greg Maddox never averaged 84 until he was about 40. He was normally 88-90 with a sinker that moved a foot during most of his career, and topped out around 94 in his younger days. Like I said, I hope the kid is successful. I never said he won't be. But he would be an exception, not the rule.

If he throws strikes and has command of three pitches, he can be successful as a pitcher in college baseball. Hit your zones and keep it down and the next thing you know it is the 9th inning, you are up 3-1 and you have only thrown 90 pitches. Big innings occur when you walk two batters in a row. A guy like that is perfect as a Saturday starter after the guys the night before were pumping 90+ all game.

This. And no way in Hell was he 5'10'. Was a good D-1 pitcher.

You wonder sometimes why some of our fans constantly look for the negative in everything we do at Southern Miss. it is really sad...

It's easy to see the positives ... They're on a billboard Lamar County was asked to buy. Any word if Attala is springing for the new carpet or magic radar gun?

That's why my post said "at one point" in his career and the point still stands. Maddux is famously known for saying that, early in his career, he just tried to over power hitters and it cost him. He learned to focus on the command opposed to the velocity.
