I'm not sure - that's what I'm curious about. 1gig handoff bidirectional pushes into the enterprise router space - I have no idea what they would give a consumer. Very curious if they are bundling faster wifi (802.11ac) with it as you're bound to hit performance bottlenecks on the inside LAN - a bestbuy switch and wireless access point won't cut it unless you have 1 gig switch ports and AC wifi. I mean they'd work but you won't be realizing the full throughput of the gigapower service by the devices on your network.

ATT provides an NV599 gateway. It can hit 900Mb+ wired, but the wireless isn't great. Most of my friends around the country with gig internet shut down the wireless and end up running Ubiquiti routers and access points. A combo of the ubiquiti Edge lite and a couple of UAP-AC access points would work fine for gig. A Ubiquiti USG, UnifiSwitch, and some UAP-AC access points would work well and be (relatively) simple to manage. These are options for tech savy folks.

If you aren't tech savy just buy the most expensive Asus wireless router that looks like a 6 horned demon and it will give you good wireless unless your house is really big.

Wonder if I can get them to turn off NAT/FW services on the NV599 and do direct Ethernet handoff to my router behind it

Here are the instructions to do "bridge mode" on the NV series. Should be the same between 589 and 599.

Guy basically said no on this. Installed this afternoon.

They gave a me a 5268AC.

I'm hitting between 150 - 350 mbps on wifi. Haven't done a wired test yet.

Wired should be close to a gigabit provided you are linking directly off of the AT&T router (or have an adequate switch). That installer may not allow it but I'll bet I can call in some AT&T favors. If I had to guess, they are probably maintaining firewall rules to prevent people from hosting services and doing other things.

Dang! Gigapower is in Huntsville but has not made it out to the burbs yet. Google Fiber will be installing a "fiber hut" about 300 yards from my house so looking forward to some choices.

RE: AT&T GigaPower Expansion
AT&T installed fiber out in Fayette County a few months back. Watched them install it in my yard along the street.

My lot faces west. They ran it parallel with the road. I thought they would have to dig a trench to bury it. Nope. They made an incision and shoved it through -- kind of like a needle and thread.

I've been checking over and over with no luck... not available at my address.

Until yesterday. It's live.

Now I need to make the switch from Comcast to ATT.

Once it hits here Mesh network with directional antennas...I don't need that much speed alone and neither do my neighbors...

Only question is will they cap?

Probably not. Their long term strategy is to push everyone to streaming. They will be getting rid of satellite and Uverse.

(RF) mesh loses half its bandwidth for every mesh link. Physics is a *****.

Some of the new satellite networks that are in planning should help coverage and speed in rural areas.

Fun fact: Chattanooga is rolling out 10 gig fiber to the home.

What's stopped me from upgrading is that I game online quite a bit and my wife watches Netflix literally all day long. Best I can find is plans that cap me at 1 gig. How quickly would we wear that gig out?

My wife watches Netflix a lot. In the month of December we used 350 GB.
