Although he had obviously slipped in the past few years as a child of the 80's Musburger was the gold standard for college football. He's the man who coined the phrase "The most exciting 25 seconds in college football" describing Clemson's run down the hill, and I remember his call in the "Hail Flutie" game between BC and Miami in 1984.

The timing makes me think this is related to his Joe Mixon comments during the Sugar Bowl.

I remember growing up with games on ABC in the 2000's he was the one and only announcer I absolutely hated. Creepy. Arrogant. Blueblood bandwagoner. I found him so simple and egregiously annoying.

I just always thought (when hearing him speak) that he must have shotgunned lots of beers before each broadcast.

Brent Musburger is retiring. Probably time to go, but the guy is a legend. He and Keith Jackson are the voice of college football to me.

He's been known to down a few PBRs in the Esso Club on Friday nights in the past.

Yeah. I remember cheering when he got fired by CBS. But was horrified that ABC brought him to college football. The one announcer who could get me to change the channel.

I'll never forget that one good punchline for Petrino.....

"The guy can really coach when he's off the motorcycle." LMAO

The guy was just an idiot. For years he would complain about things the teams were doing not realizing that it was because college rules were different than pro. He didn't do his homework and was almost always poorly prepared.

I would have to say that the gold standard would have to include Lindsay Nelson.

That was the knock on him I heard most often. He would waltz in at the last minute and just wing it, every once in a while tossing out factoids handed to him by a staffer. To be fair, he wasn't the only one of his generation with work habits like that. Al McGuire was famous for it. But he was more likable than Musberger.

Ol Mush Mouth. Oh how he hated Iowa. I loved it when got a ticket for throwing a beer out of the espn van in Nebraska...

Agreed.

I was never that impressed with Musberger's ability as the play-by-play man in the booth. His strengths -- which are *Very* formidable -- are as an interviewer and as the "anchorman" role at the studio. His time as host of The NFL Today on CBS from about '75 to '89 was just tremendous.

Lindsay Nelson and Curt Gowdy. Mushmouth was the fool's gold standard, IMHO.

I have grown up listening to Musburger. He will be missed.
