Exclamation Yahoo Sports: Fan Satisfaction Index/MAC Coaches
Guess who ranks last...

Northern Illinois: Rod Carey (36-19 at NIU, 27-8 in MAC). Satisfaction rating: 1. Carey has presided over consistently declining returns: 12-2 to 11-3 to 8-6 to 5-7. One more season in the wrong direction seemingly would be enough to end his tenure, as the Huskies have slid a long way from the five straight seasons of 11 or more wins from 2010-14.

Been tired of Carey for 2 years now. I hope we don't get worse.

I am afraid you will be disappointed. Less talent this year, no recruiting gains and same coach who fears offense and making mistakes. Huskies will not win more than 3 or 4 this year.

It was always a no brainer if I was going to renew our football season tickets. Now I'm wondering if it will really be worth it this year.

A very terrifying, sobering, and admirably honest statement.

I don't always agree with you MD, but I think you are spot on with this prediction.

I think we'll win more than that (if Maddie plays and doesn't get hurt) but I agree that I'm less optimistic this year. I just don't know who the QB is going to throw the ball to. And I don't know if the best players are even going to be on the field.

These aren't the dark days (yet) so I'm keeping the season tickets.

What do you mean by "worth it"?

That if they "suck" you won't want to go to as many games?

I'll renew to support the program at the very least.

We don f%$ked up hiring that homer! Said it when we hired him! I'll still support NIU, just knew we screwed up in that coaching decision. Never will understand it.

Yup, that decision was made in haste, without thinking about the long term consequences. We wanted a seamless transition given the talent on the roster, but we could have found a coach with more experience or recruiting power with a similar offensive and defensive scheme. Made no sense to me at the time, and now the fruits of that decision aren't very bountiful.

It's interesting, announcers during games used to keep saying what his record was as head coach, which of course was very good for the first couple years. Not so much lately.

Seems like he is best suited to be an assistant coach - understands technique and the importance of paying attention to detail. Doesn't have the interpersonal skills to be a leader. Also seems like his talent evaluation is questionable.

I firmly believe that at schools like NIU why these hires are botched so often, and convenience is chosen over diligence is looking ahead to job opportunities. Yeah Compher stayed at NIU a little bit after that hire, but I don't think ADs like Compher want to be bogged down in a lengthy hiring process to give them the flexibility and a little more ease to make a clean break as soon as their next job opportunity pops up. That really ends up hurting the athletic program.
