Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
And there's a chance the Holiday Bowl may end up, temporarily, at Petco Park if QUALCOMM gets blown up for the new Aztec stadium

RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
So will the NCAA allow a Bowl to take it's place?

Wow, that's news. Sucks when you are the second tier bowl to a upper tier one.

I see the Holiday is looking to the Padres baseball stadium when Qualcomm gets the axe. There will be another bowl in SD once the new MLS/SDSU stadium gets completed and will have a bowl that is its own product not some other bowl.

RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
They are considering a permanent move of the Holiday Bowl to Petco Park.

Quote:The Padres have already started talking to the architectural firm that designed Petco Park about what would be required to allow football to be played in the stadium.

There was an article about this here. As you can see in the photo, the most likely remodel would be removing the field-level seats along the right field wall so that a football field could be placed from right field toward the third base line. Presumably the Padres would then use removable or retractable seating in right field where those field level seats are now.

As for adding a new bowl somewhere... last year, the NCAA placed a three-year moratorium on new bowls, meaning no new bowls for the 2016, 2017, or 2018 seasons.

This is an opportunity for the Arizona Bowl to get out of TV oblivion and into the ESPN time slot previously given to the Poinsettia Bowl, if the Arizona Bowl operators are alert enough to take advantage.

Arizona Bowl would be wise not to be under the ESPN time slots. I like having a OTA broadcast and a post-Christmas date....one the ESPN would not allow.

RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
This is what happens when the lower bowl is owned by a larger one.

I could probably see the New Orleans bowl getting dropped by the Sugar Bowl eventually, although they are a major bowl. Can't think of any other bowls (mid-tier ones) that have another bowl ran by the same organization. I know the Cactus Bowl is ran by the Fiesta Bowl but being they are a major bowl also...may not need to focus solely like the Holiday needs to.

Hmmmm. Didn't see that one coming.

Reduces the number of 5-7 teams making bowl games (there's honestly no need to replace this game from the POV of guaranteeing all Bowl eligible teams actually go Bowling). But this is a blow for the Mountain West Conference, this was a good Bowl game for them in a good spot.

A couple of years ago, we had 81 teams that were 6-6 and up with only 76 spots. Many G5 teams got left out.

RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
So who was supposed to be on the other side of the MWC in this bowl in coming years? Was it just vs At-Large?

Looks like BYU in 2018, the MAC in other years.

Can BYU get a primary agreement for next year? Are there any slots not already contracted out?

Good more bowls need to go.... 6-6 teams should not make bowls, 7-5 only teams should make bowls.
In my opinion get rid of the bowl system and go straight playoff
16 playoff for national championship

16 team playoff for secondary championship (i.e. NIT for football)

While I think there are too many bowls (though as a capitalist, if you can sponsor one and get teams to come, why not?), but I really liked the Poinsettia Bowl. Even though it was not a major bowl, it was in a great location, normally had decent teams playing and seemed to be a good game alot of the time. Sad to see it go.

BYU doesn't have an agreement for 2017 either. That's likely to be sort of par for the course as an independent, although 2019 is the Aloha Bowl.

RE: Poinsettia Bowl goes bust
I'm more than a bit annoyed this bowl ended. This bowl is the one that got that Boise-TCU matchup when both got hosed of the BCS some years back, iirc?

It tended to be one that could land some of the more intriguing matchups, playing well above its place in the bowl structure...

...and that's what annoys me. This bowl was a good one, and one of the few I would watch because it could somehow get these great pairings. You wonder if it picked up enemies from the older, more established bowls because it wasn't running in their circles.

Yeah, we have too many bowls. It's a shame THIS ONE has to be one of those to see go away.

It was the Holiday Bowl that ended it, they owned the bowl. This is what happens when an organizations owns 2 bowls. If any MW bowl needed to get the axe it should be the Potato.

When SDSU and the MLS team gets the new stadium built by 2020, the Poinsettia will get revived.

Sugar Bowl has nothing to do with the New Orleans Bowl. The NOLA Bowl is run by the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation not the Sugar Bowl Committee.

Well that is good for the NO Bowl.
