The PAC-10 rivalry games on one weekend
During the time it was the PAC-10 (78-12?), how often were the 5 rivalry games played the same day?

RE: The PAC-10 rivalry games on one weekend
So what has affected this tradition more? The Pac-12 CCG or the new Notre Dame/Stanford annual series?

The ND-USC series has been around forever, and somehow USC-UCLA still managed to play the last game of the season, so USC/Stanford needing to play ND in the last game seems to be more a recent change.

EDIT. Oops Looks like the USC-UCLA game was always the week before thanksgiving, then the years that ND played at USC, the game was thanksgiving week.

In fact most rival games in the PAC-10 were the week before thanksgiving except for the Arizona-ASU game, which was thanksgiving week, so I am guessing the answer to the original question is probably a low number because of the Ariz-ASU game always being 1 week later.

The Civil War and Apple Cup were usually the 1st Saturday of December (which is now the Championship weekend).

Only in recent history after 2005 did they play those rival games on 1st weekend in December. For most of their history prior to 2005, those rival games were played the week before thanksgiving.

That was before College Football expanded into a 12-game season. After the 12-game season, both the Apple Cup and the Civil War (which traditionally closed out the season) was really moved to the First Week in December.

RE: The PAC-10 rivalry games on one weekend
The other issue now is that Stanford/Cal want The Big Game to be the week before Thanksgiving still (traditional rivalry week) so that they can have the full week of events around it (vs. having everyone take days off for Thanksgiving). Seeing Beat Michigan Week somewhat downplayed with the OSU/Michigan game after Thanksgiving now, I can see their point.

right, so essentially for only 6 years from 2005-2010 did they play in December. from 1978-2004, with a few exceptions, they played the week before thanksgiving.

I would not mind the BigTen going back to rival games to week before thanksgiving, but I am not sure how to make that work and still meet the tv requirements on thanksgiving week. Mich and Ohio St has to be the last game of the season for botg teams. Maybe the answer is have Mich and Ohio St play the week before thanksgiving and sit out thanksgiving week, but everybody else still play thanksgiving week.
