MIT is a DIII member in all of its sports which have separate national championships. The ones that don't, like water polo or rifle, have just a single classification.

Are you saying there is no NC in Rifle? Bummer...

All the rifle teams compete in one classification and have one title. Similar to men's volleyball.

Yes.

All I was trying to say is that certain sports aren't large enough to have three (or four, like football I suppose) national championships. Water polo, rifle (among others) disregard divisional classification and place all NCAA members playing that sport in a single (i.e., just DI) national championship.

(A slight variation to this is men's and women's hockey - there is no DII hockey. DII programs that have hockey can opt for either DI or DIII hockey. I think DIII programs can do the same if they're good enough.)

You're right that MIT is a DIII athletic program, but they have a rifle program, and there is no DIII rifle NC. So they're in DI with everyone else.

03-idea I just thought of something. Does your "Say What?" have anything to do with Alfred E. Newman? We hung a large banner on the watch tower at CBHS in 1960-61 of his picture and the caption of
SAY WHAT ?
