One might speculate this will open NMSU to the Big Sky as a full member.....

I really doubt UMKC is kicking themselves and probably saw this coming eventually with the league being a Dakota led conference.

Seems like there would be a greater chance of the Big Sky offering NMSU, but I don't know why they'd accept unless FBS indy proves absolutely impossible to schedule. It doesn't solve their travel issues and the Big Sky is a worse basketball conference than the WAC at this point.

NMSU travel in the Big Sky would be nightmarish compared to the WAC now.
Since the Big Sky will have 13 fb members maybe this move allows NMSU to be a football affiliate like UCD and Sac. St. if FBS football doesn't work out.

Dang! we are just weeks away from the football championship and suppose to have all the outrageous realignment speculation....but what we are getting is real realignment with the WAC and Summit....how disappointing! :)

So....I'm going to throw this out in conjunction with Seattle's coach Dollar saying that the WAC will have another expansion. The move of North Dakota to the Summit will make Oral Roberts or Omaha rethink their stay and possibly join the WAC.

The Summit won the battle with the WAC. This is bad news for them. UMKC has to be kicking themselves for moving from the Summit to the WAC.

I'd say the Big Sky would backfill with NMSU, but I'm not sure they'll do it, seeing as how they treated Idaho. Although I suspect that ultimatum was really asked for by the UI President to force a move down.

The only ultimatum (at least as far as it was reported in the press) was that Idaho was given a specific date to make a decision regarding the 2018 season. If Idaho's administration wanted time, they could have opted to play 2018 as either an FBS or FCS independent.

Big Sky solves no problems for NMSU.

It's not as good of a hoops league as the WAC and the travel is no improvement. WAC is not a bunch of short trips but they can fly direct from El Paso to Chicago St, Grand Canyon, and UTRGV, and can get directs to LA and bus 100 miles to Bakersfield.

The only workable solutions for NMSU are MWC, Sun Belt, CUSA and the Valley

Correct. The Big Sky needed to make the 2018 schedules.

RE: North Dakota to Summit League and MVFC
Seems to me the late start in football might have something to do with the MVFC. My guess is that they don't want to have 11 schools and are either going to allow a Wichita St start up program to start up or anticipating losing Missouri St by then.

This has some other interesting implications for the Summit. UND will be their 5th football program; I think it puts them in a place to where they could leverage the MVFC if they ever felt they needed to. Two Minnesota D2 call ups and you potentially have both an FCS autobid but also hockey sponsorship. Northern Colorado is also out there as an option too.

Meanwhile back in the Big Sky I think NMSU gets the right of first refusal. It could also set off race for any western D2 football programs with aspirations or a GCU or a Utah Valley to jockey for inclusion.

The other option would be for the Big Sky to send one school to the WAC for all sports but football, but keep it as a football affiliate. The logical candidate would be Northern Colorado, who is not particularly close to any other school in the league. UNC is a WAC member in baseball as well.

I thought that people kept saying that the MVFC is full. Who is likely going to leave the MVFC for North Dakota to join?

Mo St and Youngstown St are the the logical candidates, as both have expressed some passion for FBS in the past. Why anyone would take them now is a bigger question.

Actually this is great news for the WAC as it gives the Summit ten members. That means the chances of the Summit taking back UMKC from the WAC just went down to about nil.

If the Big Sky takes a WAC school, they're in real trouble.
