The entrance fee will go way up if UND cuts sports, which I expect. M/W tennis and M/W swimming can be expected to go, leaving 16 sports, 13 of which would be Summit sports.

Unless rich alums step up to fund those sports independently, as UND's M Golf team appears to be.

But if your prediction holds, it would align UND's varsity sports offering to match NDSU's with the following exceptions:

- NDSU has wrestling and baseball
- UND has M/W (ice) hockey

Shows that NDSU has major issues with Title IX if they want to be FBS eventually. Both schools are predominantly male, but NDSU bought a nursing school in Bismarck, so that number has been going down for them. UND can actually add a women's sport without running afoul of Title Ix.

Want UND to add M/W lax eventually when the budget returns to normal. We have excellent facilities for them and still no DI men's lax in Minn or further west. That would also appeal to Canadian kids, as hockey does.

If curling was an NCAA sport, we'd be an instant power in that, too.

NDSU's participation numbers in football wouldn't change if it went from FCS to FBS.

In both cases, it would have around 100 participants and 85 scholarship players. (just in FBS, more would have full scholarships)

Title IX is based on participation, not scholarships.

NDSU has to cut only $400k from its budget, according to a local media person and no sports will be cut.

$400k in both of the next two years.

http://www.inforum.com/sports/4223173-nd...te-funding

Quote:Larsen said no sports will be dropped and funding for scholarships and cost of attendance will not be part of the cost-cutting moves. Larsen said it's too early in the process to implement any specific reductions.

"There are a lot of moving parts," he said.

The $2.1 million the athletic department gets from the state represents just one revenue stream in this year's $22.03 million overall athletic budget. The department has already taken cost-cutting measures by not hiring two positions that were slated in the budget.

Larsen said the budgetary cuts are something he's discussed with Bresciani and NDSU's vice president of finance for the last week or so.

"It's going to affect operations," Larsen said. "But I think our staff understands the magnitude of it."

Certainly, it would help if the Bison football team could schedule an FBS opponent every season. Those programs typically offer a guarantee of at least $350,000 to $400,000 or more to play an FCS program like NDSU.

But the Bison aren't finding many takers. Not many FBS programs are willing to play a team that is 8-3 against FBS competition in the last 11 games. That includes five straight with the latest a win over the University of Iowa last fall.

Larsen said he has hopes of scheduling an FBS opponent in 2018 that "would help alleviate" the budget concern.

NDSU's next scheduled FBS game is 2020 at the University of Oregon, in which the Ducks are paying NDSU a $650,000 guarantee. The University of Colorado is on the schedule for 2024.

That number really isn't going to be that hard to come up with. Booking a FBS game takes care of the 2018 budget issue. The 2017 budget issue can be made up with an increase in revenue (primarily at the new basketball arena with ticket/concession sales) and a slight increase in Teammakers contributions.

Well I really doubt any P5 team will be interested in that matchup.

They will find a game. In general the P5 isn't scared of the FCS - even NDSU.
