UNC-Duke has been moved away from rivalry weekend. Why?

For the first time in forever UNC doesn't get a bye before GT. But Duke gets Army before Georgia Tech. So we'll call that a push. Bust on both teams getting a bye though. Hit on >= 4 teams with bye or FCS. That's 1/3 of the entire schedule.

Clemson gets a bye before Georgia Tech.
Miami gets a bye before Georgia Tech.
Wake Forest gets a bye before Georgia Tech.
U[sic]GA gets a FCS before Georgia Tech.

Oops... well, unless you count Duke playing Army as a bye. :)

Georgia Tech also gets a bye before playing Miami. Conveniently forgetting that, eh?

If you're going full conspiracy theorist, at least whine that Miami gets one more day of rest than GT for playing their previous game on a Friday.

2 things:

1) I'm glad Clemson's Friday game is as far North as possible - still prefer top contenders to play on Thursday (vs. non-contenders) or Saturday, though.

2) At least this year there aren't a bunch of marquee ACC matchups on weeknights like in the past - really, only GT @ Miami (and maybe the Black Friday games) are likely to impact the division races, if I were guessing. Otherwise it's games that would be on ESPNews or Raycom, mostly.

So on the whole I'd say better, but still needs improvement.

I went to Boston College last year to see Clemson on a Friday night. It was great, got back to SC in time mid-day to watch football the rest of the day.

Might do it again for Syracuse, because once a year Friday night is actually a convenient trip.

In ACC play only:

-2 teams get an extra week to prepare for UNC & Duke
-1 team gets an extra week to prepare for UVA, NC State, Pitt, FSU, & Miami
-0 teams get an extra week to prepare for Louisville, Syracuse, BC, Clemson, Syracuse, & Wake

I'm just here for the comments... 04-cheers

RE: ACC Football Schedule released today
Teams that had to play a conference team coming off a bye, by year:

2017:
0: BC, Clemson, UofL, Cuse, WF, VT
1: FSU (Cuse), NCST (BC), Miami (GT), Pitt (UNC), UVA (UofL)
2: Duke (FSU, UVA), UNC (Pitt, VT)
3: GT (Miami, Clemson, WF)

2016:
0: BC, UofL, NCST, Miami, UVA
1: FSU (CU), Cuse (BC), WF (NCST), UNC (VT), Pitt (UVA), VT (Pitt)
2: CU (FSU, Cuse), Duke (GT, UofL),
3: GT (Duke, Miami, UNC)

2015 (ND got hit by 3 ACC teams coming off byes this year):
0: BC, CU, UofL, NCST, Cuse, Duke, Miami, UNC, UVA
1: FSU (UofL), GT (VT), Pitt (UVA),
2:
3: WF (FSU, UNC, NCST), VT (Pitt, GT, Duke)

2014 and back is two-bye era due to conference game scheduling. 2013 and back adds Maryland. I was too lazy to go further, plus the data set changes due to the former.

Adding the last two years up you get:
0: BC, UofL
1: Miami, UVA, NCST, Cuse, WF, VT
2: Pitt, FSU, Clemson
3: UNC
4: Duke
5:
6: GT

Eight teams have had at least 6x less conference bye opponents (57% of the ACC).
Eleven teams have had at least 3x less conference bye opponents (79% of the ACC).

No other team but Duke comes within two byes of GT.

But it's just me being a conspiracy theorist amirite?!

ACC Football Schedule released today
2017 Louisville football schedule
Sept. 2: vs. Purdue, in Indianapolis
Sept. 9: at North Carolina*
Sept. 16: Clemson*
Sept. 23: Kent State
Sept. 30: Murray State
Oct. 5: at NC State (Thursday)*
Oct. 14: Boston College*
Oct. 21: at Florida State*
Oct. 28: at Wake Forest*
Nov. 4: Open
Nov. 11: Virginia*
Nov. 18: Syracuse*
Nov. 25: at Kentucky
*-ACC game
Home games in bold

So our home opener is against the national champs. At least the spread Clemson & FSU over 8 games instead of cramming them into the first 5.

I was just givin' you a hard time. Facing a team who had a bye week to prep for GT is certainly a disadvantage, but I think it's a little rich to cry foul if GT also has a bye week at the same time. That's all I was getting at with that comment.

Overall though, it certainly is a strange scheduling quirk and I don't fault GT fans for pointing it out.

It seems that at least one of those bye weeks is usually caused by GT playing on Thursday nights. Does the GT administration/fanbase value the Thursday night slot enough to annually request it, or are they just getting stuck with it?

I know some VT fans are pretty ticked that we don't have a Thursday game scheduled this year - as much as I enjoyed it as a student, I think that timeslot has lost a lot of its luster in recent years competing with the NFL. No big deal to go without one from this VT fan's point of view.

When Dan Radakovich left so did GT's desire to play on Thursday. GT was eager to play on Thursday early on in the 00's for exposure when Thursday presented a solo stage. Now Thursday and Friday are routinely crowded. And come November nearly every day but Sunday and Monday has CFB. Oversaturation of weeknight games combined with horrific Atlanta traffic has more or less killed GT's interest in playing on Thursday. The ACC Thursday games GT has played has more or less been forced upon it by the ACC (Clemson '16, VT '15, VT AND Clemson '13, etc).

It's retarded to me the ACC wants to keep forcing GT to play Clemson and VT on Thursdays. Those are games GT wants on Saturday to sell out the visiting allotment. And putting GT-CU on Thursday is selling the ACC's best rivalry short.
