OT: Michigan going to Rome (yes Italy) for 3 spring practices
The new rule doesn't kick in until this summer so Michigan is taking advantage of the rule again. I read in another article where they joked Michigan is going to open a campus in the Bahamas as it would technically be "on campus" if they decided to go there for spring practices in the future.

That's what I've been saying, anything over $60MM you have to be creative on how to waste it.

RE: OT: Michigan going to Rome (yes Italy) for 3 spring practices
“During the trip to Rome, the Wolverines will be immersed in the culture of Italy. The team will visit historic landmarks, spend time with youth at orphanages, and visit deployed U.S. military in the country amongst other team activities,” the release says. “The experience will culminate with a youth clinic, and the team will play a scrimmage that will be open to the Italian public.”
If they can, why not? With them visiting US military stationed in Italy, and holding a youth clinic for Italian youngsters, it could definitely serve as a plus in their marketing and public relations campaign. And the thing with a lot of schools competing for recruits and whatnot is that they're all looking for that niche which will set them apart. A trip to Italy is a pretty damn nice niche to have.
I don't know what rule you guys are talking about, which will soon be changing, but the thing about this that leaves me scratching my head is that I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between taking the team on what's essentially a vacation in Italy and just flat-out bribing a recruit to come to your university? I know there's a difference between a booster saying he'll give a guy a trip to Italy if he chooses Michigan, and the University of Michigan doing that for their whole team because if the university does it, it's with university funds. But in the end, university funds basically come from boosters and fans anyway.
Maybe the rule you guys are talking about pertains to that matter, but I'd need for one of you to fill me in on that because I don't know anything about it right now aside from being befuddled as to how this is allowed in collegiate sports.

It won't be much longer. They changed the rule so that you can't hold satellite camps and go practice off campus. The new rule takes effect this summer, so they're doing this while they still can, basically as a middle finger to everyone else.

All about athletic departments maintaining their "non-profit" status.

Wouldn't mind going back sometime because when I was there in HS, I remember the females being very pleasing to the eye, although nothing like Colombia, as I found out this past summer. lol

I am. I mean, I have zero desire to go to Rome (or any place that I can't get to on MARTA, really), but it's good for the program and for the kids. A lot of them have probably never left the country.
