WBB Game 18, Con USA Game 7: ODU 8-9 (3-3) vs CHA 13-4 (5-1)
This Saturday at 4 pm the LM will play the Charlotte 49ers for a key game in the standings. It's also military appreciate night. Let's take a look at the Con USA standings. ODU is very much in the middle of the pack. After today we have 11 conference game left. Of course we want to try to win the conference, but a top four finish gives us a two round bye. We are at that point were every game matters and we need to win. Teams that are ahead of us in the standings are a must win.
Charlotte 5-1
WKU 5-1
M Tennesee 5-1
UTSA 4-1
Marshall 3-3
Southern Miss 3-3
La Tech 3-3
ODU 3-3
North Texas 3-3
UTEP 2-3
UAB 2-4
Florida Intl 2-4
Rice 1-5
Florida Atlantic 0-6

This year the 49ers have the highest RPI in the league. Head coach Cara Consuegra has put together a team with a really good resume and might find itself in the postseason for the fifth time in the last six years.

Starting Five
#15 Nyilah Jamison-Myers 6'3" F Rd JR 9.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 0.5 apg, 1.8 bpg, 49.3 FG%, 51.8 FT%, 21.1 mpg
#24 Grace Hunter 5'9" G SO 16.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.1 apg, 48.2 FG%, 35.5 3P%, 72.2 Ft%, 33.9 mpg.
#21 Lefty Webster 5'8" G SR 13.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 5.3 apg, 2.3 spg, 1.0 bpg, 48.6 Fg%, 40.7 3P%, 76.2 FT%, 36.7 mpg
#01 Ciara Gregory 5'7" G SR 14.5 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.3 spg, 36.8 FG%, 35.2 3P%, 93.3 FT%, 31.0 mpg
#04 Laia Raventos 5'7" G SO 9.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 5.6 apg, 2.9 spg, 47.6 FG%, 40.9 3P%, 62.5 FT%, 32.1 mpg
Top Bench
#44 Amaya Ransom 5'11" G JR 4.9, 3.6 rpg, 1.3 apg, 33.7 FG%, 24.6 3P%, 57.1 FT%, 20.2 mpg
#34 Dara Pearson 6'3" F Rd FR 3.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 0.2 apg, 41.9 FG%, 44.0 FT%, 14.1 mpg

You want local ties. No problem. Lefty is from Norfolk Christian, Amaya is from VB's Landstown, and Dara is from Hampton high school. Since conference play has started, the 49ers have four players averaging 12 points or more. Hunter averages 19.3 ppg, Gregory averages 16.2 ppg, Webster averages 12.5, and Jamison-Myers averages 13.8 ppg. Raventos has increased her average of 5.6 apg to 7.0 apg. My point. Since conference play has started, this team is playing much better. Most of the starters will play the entire game. They have two floor generals in RAventos and Lefty. Gregory and Ransom are dangerous beyond the arc. Jamison-Myers and Pearson live under the basket. Lefty is all over the place. She is a good player and I still love the name.

Inside the stats.....
...............CHA.......ODU
PPG........71.8........65.9
OPPG.....65.6........67.2
FG%.......43.2........42.7
3P%.......34.3........31.9
3PMG.....7.4..........4.8
FT%.......65.4.........68.5
FTMG.....9.5..........12.2
RPG.......38.2.........40.8
ORPG.....42.2.........35.3
APG.......16.9.........13.8
TPG........16.3.........18.9
SPG........9.5...........7.1
BPG........6.0...........3.9
AST/TO ratio:
CHA: 1.0, ODU: 0.7

Charlotte leads the league in apg and bpg. They have good fundamentals. The one thing ODU does have is the home field. The last time that we lost at home to the 49ers was on Feb 9th, 1990. Last year we went 3-0 against them. That will add fire to the game since the 49ers will remember that.

Good news. ODU had 22 offensive boards. That is a season high. We scored 26 second chance points to Charlotte's 10. And kept us in the game. The turnovers killed us because they were stupid and badly timed. For example, remember the inbound pass that was stolen and then went in the other team's basket. The 49ers scored 21 points off our turnovers, which is way too much. I realize that Keyana Brown did get player of the game because her two threes were key in making a comeback when we were down 9. However we need more of that. For the game she went 2-for-11 from behind the arc. Simms lead the team going 4-for-6 with the three ball. We need another three point shooter on the team to help us out. Plus the 53.8 FT% is disappointing. Karen had mentioned recently that the team was free throw competitions and taking pride in there shooting. 11-for-20 cost us the game too....

This is a bad loss for us. No way around it. Have to regroup against Rice....
