That is the nice thing about having 3 great guards, at least one of them will have a good game. In this case Toney kept EMU in the game.
Toney proves how valuable he is. Without him, we don't really have anyone that can get to the basket. Lee used to be able to do that, but hasn't shown it at all this year. Shame.
Lee can get to the basketball better than anyone in the conference. When Lee is in the game the opposing team will have their best defender on him. After the suspension, his confidence has been reduced
He was not that great prior the suspension and lets agree that lee suspension was due to him
Before the suspension, Lee was the team's leading scorer. Listen, I'm not defending his on court-off court antics, but there is no guard in the MAC conference with Lee's offensive talent. The unstructured offense is hurting Lee.
Murphy's offense allows 1 on 1 play, and if a player makes more than he misses, he can have the green light. Before the suspension, both Lee and Mangum were given the green light. This means if each of them want to shoot contested 30 footers, it is ok. If you make more than you miss or close to 50/50, then you can shoot anytime. Unfortunately Lee went into a bit of a slump and was yanked immediately if a couple shots were missed. The unstructured offense left Lee debating whether or not he is allowed to keep shooting and when he took a bad shot, he got benched. This has frustrated Lee. To that end, who can tell me the shooting percentage for Mangum the last three games? It's terrible, terrible, terrible and so is Lee's percentage.
Both Lee and Mangum are awesome talents! I would put both of them in the discussion as top 5 guards in the entire conference. The problem with both Lee and Mangum is that both are allowed to shoot 30 foot contested shots with 25 seconds on the clock (although I believe Murphy has turned Lee's light from green to yellow).
If EMU wants to improve, both Mangum and Lee must stop jacking up 25-30 foot contested jump shots ) because both of them are hurting the team when they do this.
At the WMU game, I watched Mangum rush his shot because he was heavily guarded. When he caught the ball it was going up if he were 30ft out, double teamed, or with 25 seconds on the shot clock. However, in the flow of the game, Toney and Bond drove to the basket, help defenders collapsed on them, and they kicked the ball out to Mangum for a wide open 3 point shot and Mangum drained both of them that gave us separation and demoralized WMU. This is how Mangum should be used!!!!
Mangum has really developed his game and much credit goes to him and the coaching staff. However, both Mangum and Lee need their green lights switched to atleast YELLOW. If Murphy makes that adjustment, we become more consistent and I believe a favorite to win the MAC!!
Go EMU Eagles!!
