Bring back the "new" Big East
A thread about "ideal" conferences has led me to believe that the Big East should be revived and split away from the ACC in an effort to make conferences more regional.

The "NEW" Big East
Notre Dame
Louisville
Miami
West Virginia
Pitt
Penn State
Rutgers
Boston College
Syracuse
Virginia Tech

The NEW ACC
Maryland
UVa
Carolina
Dook
Wake Forest
NC State
Clemson
South Carolina
Georgia Tech
Florida State

The B1G returns to being the B1G.
The Big 8 adds Utah for 9
The SWC reforms with 9 (Texas, A&M, Rice, Houston, SMU, TT, Arkansas, Baylor and TCU).
The PAC goes back to 10.
The SEC w/ their original 10.

It sure would make me happy.

Just for Terry we could add Cincinnati to the Big East and leave Notre Dame independent.

Speak for yourself. The current ACC is beautiful.

Bring back the "new" Big East
I enjoyed the BE & even the Metro but I don't have any desire to return. The ACC is far superior.

XLance, why are you always trying to get rid of the new teams? Your Southern Hospitality is lacking...

RE: Bring back the "new" Big East
XLance shoots his entire premise in the foot by calling for regional conferences, then includes Miami in the new Big East.

Just stop, get lost, and accept that UNC football won't be relevant in any scenario you can dream up.

If any realignment happens to create more regional conferences, it's going to be at the G5 level where lower travel costs will help offset the lower revenues from paltry TV deals. P5 schools don't need to worry as much about regionalism, since the TV money makes up for it.

That would essentially be Pitt's dream conference so I'd be happy with it.

If you're getting rid of "new" teams, you need to get rid of Florida State, too, since they've only been a member since the early 90s. You can't have your cake and.....

RE: Bring back the "new" Big East
I'm extremely happy with the current line-up and don't want any new schools, but I would like a few minor changes:

A) Push to get rid of divisions and have the schedule set-up to where the teams play regional opponents more frequently.

Or

B) Switch Virginia Tech with an Atlantic team (BC or SU) to create a true zipper. This also creates some great yearly made for TV match-ups like VT-Clemson, VT-FSU, and VT-Louisville. Not to mention, it helps the strength of schedule for the conferences stronger football programs. The UVa-VT game would remain, and Pitt vs. Louisville could emerge as a great regional bout.

Virginia Tech has much, much, much more history with the Atlantic Division than they do with the Coastal, besides Virginia, of course.

NO DOUBT... this is the best possible outcome.

All true, but... who would be left to represent the Coastal division in football?

From a football standpoint, this just isn't true.

Pitt, Miami and Virginia Tech are all in the Coastal and were members during the inaugural Big East football season. Add in Virginia and there's 3 teams with at least 20 years of football history with Virginia Tech in the same division.

Virginia Tech has some old history with FSU and Louisville in the old Metro Conference, but that was only ever a basketball conference that dissolved over 20 years ago (and FSU left before it disbanded). Syracuse & BC I'll give you for football, but VT has plenty of history with its Coastal division opponents.

So if you switch VT for BC or Syracuse, then you're actually losing more historical football opponents within a division, unless you're saying to go way, way back to the Southern Conference that included Clemson, NC State and UNC. But I don't think that's really all that relevant, considering those teams left in 1953 and the majority of living alumni have zero connection to the Southern Conference.

Actually, he is correct... VT has more history with the Atlantic division (outside of UVa, that is):

VT Top 25 all-time most-played opponents
UVA - 92 games ACC Coastal
VMI - 74
W&M - 63
WVU - 51
Richmond - 50
NC State - 48 ACC Atlantic
W&L - 45
Wake Forest - 37 ACC Atlantic
Florida St - 36 ACC Atlantic
N Carolina - 34 ACC Coastal
Miami (FL) - 33 ACC Coastal
Clemson - 31 ACC Atlantic
Maryland - 31
Boston College - 24 ACC Atlantic
Roanoke - 23
Duke - 23 ACC Coastal
Hampton-Sydner - 22
S Carolina - 20
E Carolina - 20
Geo Wash - 19
Kentucky - 19
Temple - 17
Syracuse - 17 ACC Atlantic
Rutgers - 15
Pittsburgh - 15 ACC Coastal

If we assume that the game with UVa is untouchable, the next most-played ACC teams are in the Atlantic division (and when you factor in the fact that Coastal teams have a 12 year boost thanks to the current scheduling policy, it's even more clear that the Hokies' "natural" rivals are NOT in the Coastal division!).

Exactly, thanks HM. Wake is also the Hokies' closest opponent, correct?

RE: Bring back the "new" Big East
In fact, if you look at VT's all-time opponents prior to joining the ACC (and being put into the Coastal division), the numbers are:

Coastal teams: 151 (with 81 of those being UVa)
Atlantic teams: 168

Noteworthy: before the ACC, VT and GT had only played twice.

I think when VT, Miami and BC all joined, the ACC decided to put the two geographic extremes (at the time Miami and BC) into opposite divisions. They also decided to put Miami opposite FSU. When everything else was put into place, that left VT in the Coastal.

Well, I'm putting my chips on Miami, UNC, GT, and Pitt. I am a HUGE fan of Pat Narduzzi and I believe if he has another solid year he could be Notre Dame's next coach, barring a Brian Kelly resurgence.

Another cool thing that I'd like to see is a rotational rivalry week between Miami, Syracuse, Pitt, and BC. I believe the Big Ten does this with MSU, Penn State, Rutgers, and Maryland. Albeit it would be easier if they were all in the same division, or we abandoned divisions.

Look at the number of games between VT and Big East "rivals" before the football conference:

BC-0
Miami-9
Pitt-0
Rutgers-2
Syracuse-5
Temple-5
West Virginia-37 (Granted this was a yearly game, and an actually rivalry dating back to before the Southern Conference.)

Just for fun, some other former Eastern independent schools:

Army-6
Holy Cross-0
Navy-9
Penn State-0 (still 0 by the way)
Villanova-5

As one can see, Virginia Tech's membership in the Big East was a marriage of convenience and they would not have been included had Penn State been. VT has much more history with the traditional ACC schools, South Carolina, and Florida State.

The relationship with Metro Conference schools was for Olympic sports and never really translated to the football field. College football has always been very much a regional sport.

In football, there is no longer a need for cross division rivals so you get to play every one every 3 1/2 years. Play everyone in your division home and away in basketball.

Sweet. The chance of becoming division champion:

Louisville 70%
Florida St 40%
Clemson 35%
VT 20%
Miami 10%

Your divisions have the advantage of not requiring ANY permanent cross-division rivals pairs (good job!). However, as much as I would like to see the Hokies in the ACC CG every other year*, it's WAY out of balance.

* with this layout, it would come down to VT vs. UL wouldn't it? (no offense to the NC schools and UVa, but seriously...)
