Many future players picked their teams before JMU's success. Our recruiting class looks good, but Villanova's and NDSU's are currently ranked higher. I don't understand why 2 very good players (3 star) from Fredericksburg are going to Villanova and not JMU. It does not appear we sent them an offer.

BSKB24 might be able to shed some light. Withers pulled a schollie from a F'burg kid. Maybe some bridges burned.

Coincidence? If this kid was looking at JMU, he would have been behind GT's leading rusher from the past 2 seasons, Cardon Johnson (2015 2nd team All CAA), and Sharp, a 3 star recruit himself out of HS with multiple P5 offers..Heck, maybe even Woods also. And Marshall, Sharpe each have 2 seasons left.

VU on the other hand, leading rusher, will be a Jr, had 799 yards. Their 3rd leading rusher (QB was 2nd) was a senior..Their 4th leading rusher will be a senior. This kid will likely start out as VU's #1 or #2 RB. At JMU he would likely have been starting out as #4 or 5, and maybe redshirted.

FWIW, rivals shows him with 7 I-A offers (apparently the Cuse one was rescinded)
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/5315

As far as the LB, Rivals had him as a 2 star. No IA offers shown.

I think BDK's analysis is spot on and his place on a depth chart is likely the primary reason. But don't overlook the fact that we will occasionally lose some battles to Villanova based on the the fact that they're "Villanova". I love JMU as much as the rest of you, but I also can admit that Villanova is a special place too. The school spirit is high (largely based off of basketball success), the academics are top notch, the campus is incredibly beautiful, and I'm sure it's the perfect place for some of the kids that we also choose to recruit. It doesn't irk me too much when we lose a kid to 'Nova. It's going to happen from time to time.

If you're a highly recruited tailback who is interested in JMU, you have to fight through Cardon Johnson (STUD), Trai Sharp (Future STUD) and Taylor Woods (versatile back we'll see a lot of next year). Oh, and Marcus Marshall is coming in as well who led an ACC team in rushing the last two years. There are other places TB's are looking right now than Harrisonburg and that is just fine with me and a very good problem to have.

Right on. As BDK captured this happens all the time, especially at the skill positions. People often wonder why a top recruit turns down Ohio State to play at Cal but if you're going into a situation where your position is stacked why risk riding the bench for 2+ years, let alone risk not playing at all? Lack of playing time/fit is the reason we get the Marshalls and Vads in the first place.

With our situation at RB, I'm glad we didn't also sign this kid. We are probably better off signing another OL/DL. Or perhaps a WR.....the baby giraffe is going to need someone to throw the ball to in a few years.

I'm not sure JMU was after him. Honestly, there are so many good players out there compared to just a few years ago. Fredericksburg has been a really good recruiting area for Richmond and William & Mary in recent years, also. If Withers was still here we would struggle to get some of those kids. High School coaches did not like him.

Lol, when you google "jmu football".

"The James Madison Dukes football team, founded in 1972, plays at Bridgeforth Stadium and is currently coached by Mike Houston. The JMU football team was rarely the centerpiece of JMU sports until the hiring of prior coach, Mickey Matthews, in 1999."

That's the side note provided by wiki, not even the slightest mention of Withers. Found this humorous.

He filled a gap. The program didn't regress under him and the games after his first five (the start of the 2014 season was horrible), became fun to watch until VL went down. Then, even with some wins, there wasn't much more for the fans to see, not due to the team, but due to EW's attitude from that point forward.

Withers quit on JMU and his players. Prior to Gameday, I thought more of him. It was good he left when he did.

Vad is awesome in many ways. One of my favorite players of all time. He came to the NC game which shows me he cares about JMU too.

Vad spoke to the crowd at the Pep Rally before the game and you could see and feel the love JMU Nation has for him!!

Would of been interesting to see if Vad has played QB for us this year. Perhaps the success would of been the same or better, but I also think Brian may have been a better fit for this offense.

He is just the nicest. I saw him before the game and on the field and we kind of dapped and I said JMU nation is proud of you bro and then we ran into each other on the field and bro-hugged and I might have cried in his arms...

JK but I definitely told him I love him, and that God shines through him, which is super true.

The last 10 times I read this thread the last couple days I was thinking you were talking about an interaction with Withers. Now that I see it's Vad it makes a little more sense.... The "me tool" from nation made me reread the last couple posts.

Looks like JMU keeps its staff intact. Hanson, Stinespring, Weaver, Thweatt, Sims, Dudzik and John Williams all have signed new addendum.

Am told, Powell and Bowers contracts have carried forward unchanged from last year.

If I'm reading correctly, the entire staff returns next season.

A championship team with one of the nation's best recruiting classes and few holes returns its entire coaching staff. This ought to be fun.
